Great if you need to carry troops or 5 tons. I have a friend with one, he cut a tire on a trail, the thing is 8 feet wide. Oh, and the tires cost $1600 each if you don't buy them surplus. He bought another truck to bob just to get the two tires. The novelty wears off quick.

I know plenty of people making their living off of these rigs. They are no more heavy than any of the other large expo vehicles. Usually a bobbed version weighs in about 16k lbs and their cargo capacity is halved. Typically, they use a front spring pack on a single axle. I think that in a few years, you will see these as the base of many an expo vehicle. It is certainly in my plans. 6x6 (or 4x4) class 8 vehicle with a Cummins 8.3, Allison auto, heavy duty, way low miles (and of course a bunch of deferred or required maintenance) frame for $3-5k? Count me in.

The livery guys figured out a few years back that this is the best deal in heavy duty off-road vehicles. M939 series started getting dumped in earnest by the military in about 2011. The support and after-market thing will catch up soon. an example is that those $1500 tires can be easily had, from dozens of sources shipped new for $300 per. Steel Soldiers is an incredible recourse for these things. You should see some of the riggs they are making over there.

And it gets 9 mpg.

I love to travel, I had a motor home with a Ford V10 that got 8-9 mpg and I put 32,000 miles on it. I loved it on .99 per gallon gas. When the dollar collapses, and it will, gas will be $10-20 per gallon and probably rationed. How much will you be able to drive then? Just think of how many big RV's you see in Europe?

If you can make money off it, give local off road tours, more power to you, buy a fleet of them. Then let us know how "plenty of people making their living off of these rigs". Forest service permits for paying tours are closed in my area. They would not let the hummers use the jeep trails for commercial use.

Denying reality does not excuse you from the consequences of denying reality.

I get it. It's not for you. Nobody I know is doing tours. They are doing hard hauls in Utah's oil country, backcountry tows, construction and the like. I am going to build a slow-hauler truck. An all-terrain toy hauler that I will live in part-time. Mileage almost doesn't matter as it's way cheaper than a mortgage, insurance and whatever else. I'll be taking a few months at a time to travel across two states with a Samurai and two enduros in the back. Full convertible living space, etc. Different strokes, bro.
