Broke trans pan bolt!

Hey guys.
yesterday I changed the transmission filter and oil in my 01 disco 2, while putting pan bolts back in, I checked the bolts with a torque wrench (12lbs) and for some reason it did not click and the bolt at the driver rear corner of the pan snapped off after over torquing it with the larger handled new torque wrench. Any one here ever had this happen? Any ideas? Will it hold oil in this condition?

I should have just been fine with how tight they where by hand but I thought I would get them to spec since my new torque wrench was right there, big mistake! Why it didn't click on only that bolt I have no idea, and the longer handle made it so I could not feel it getting tighter than the rest. Very frustrated. I have not put ATF in yet.

i would pull the pan off get the broken part out. check threads with a thread chaser ensure nothing is causing binding then put a new bolt in. you dont want anything getting in or out of that tranny.

I had this same thing happen on an engine pan - thankfully the engine was still on the stand and not in the car. Stupid torque wrench, I should have just done hand tight, then snug up if it leaks. My guess is they don't like such low specs and are unreliable at that low level

Take the pan back off, if you are lucky there will be enough of the shaft still above the face of the trans to grab with some channel locks or other locking pliers

There is about one thread showing, and of corse its the corner that's partially obstructed by the exhaust so no straight shot with a drill bit unless I remove it from the exhaust manifold. I'm headed out to give something a try, don't know what.

Well today's luck was no different than yesterday's..... Tried to take off the pipes from the exghaust manifold to the muffler to gain a straight shot at the bolt to drill and extract, bolt/stud at the header side of the passenger side pipe broke off in the exhaust manifold

Does anyone know the factory size of the stud bolt on the manifold and the bolt size on the transmission pan?

Can you get in there with a Mig or Tig welder? Maybe weld a nut to what is left of the thread to back that bolt back out. I've had to do this a few times in my life.
Just get the nut centered over the broken bolt really well and glue them together in the center. Usually even a rusted/stuck bolt or stud will come out with the the intense localized heat.
