Brush Guard

Anybody know where I can find (or what fits) a normal run of the mill brush/grille guard for our astute traveling machines?

I know one of you just trashed one, and I was right there cheering you on. Here's my oh crap moment. The look of the brush guard has actually grown on me ... so here I am begging to see if somebody knows where I can get one. Help?

A yard near me has a chrome Jaos unit on a 1996 Montero LS, asking $150 for it.

With a phone number, I can forward a picture to you.

Check your private messages. Thanks for the help on it. I wonder what shipping would be like to Florida from there?

@Red ... I know. But the wife has been tainted by our Jeep club and now considers the Monty to be a useless bucket of bolts. So I can't justify spending that much anymore on it. That's fine though, because I'd like to see how far I can go on a budget build anyways. She can take her Jeep and stuff it.

EDIT: I don't consider the Monty a useless bucket of bolts, and I've turned down multiple Jeeps to keep it. I love the rig and will be buried in it. Which is highly likely the way I wheel it offroad.

Not keen on the brush guard. I prefer a proper bumper since brush guards are more cosmetic than anything else. If you can weld or have friends who can, then buy a decent bumper for something else with similar dimensions and modify it to fit your Monty.

Also consider upgrading to an SR 9.5" rear axle with an air locker. Don't forget to grab the stock compressor & switch when you do.

That's a really decent price for a Jaos unit... but the OP better act quick cause knowing the local yards, rigs don't stay around long.

Tell your wife that ignorance is bliss... then drive around her and strap her out when she gets stuck.

That's what I'm really leaning towards. I know that Jeep WJ (Grand Cherokee) stuff is very similar. Are there any other vehicles that are close in size to a Monty?

Yeah ... don't remind me. Still searching. I have me "but a rear axle" fund waiting for when one does show up in my area. I actually think there's a 98 Gen II SR model at a local dealership. It's been sitting there for a REALLY long time. I know the idiot who owns the dealership doesn't know cars at all, because he's advertising it as a "Dakar Edition/Model" Montero. He's also asking $6500 for it. Riiiight ....

I swiftly reminded her of who's paying for it. And that I didn't know that a Hyundai Sonata can go off road ... :)

My bumper is from a Jeep as well (JK or TJ, I can't remember) but then again I built an adapter so they'd fit. Toyota 4runner bumpers may also fit (width wise).

I'm sure you know this but I'll say it anyway for others who may be reading... You'll most likely need to modify the mounts to fit a bumper for other rigs. I prefer making some kind of adapter so that I can keep the mitsu stock and the bumper stock so I can sell either of them easily if I ever elect to 'upgrade' later. LOL, now all that said, I did modify the frame rails up front so the stock bumper will no longer fit there plus I used an adapter so I could mount the Jeep Bumper. My rear end uses just an adapter to mount the bumper.

I figured that much as in some sort of modification would be necessary. I was thinking of just figuring out where the mismatch in width our mounting was, then plan on making it work via some sort of mounting plates bolted to the stock frame rails. I did notice that there's what looks like brush guard mounting points just outside where the factory tow points are on the front. Not sure what those 4 bolts hold on, but I'm going to investigate more. Thanks for all the inputs guys!

I found a 97ish land rover disco ARB bumper locally on CL. Seller was kinda flakey. They got all mad because 4 mitsu and 3 toyota guys looked at it! I did find out that it would fit with minoe mods to the mounting brackets. Width and depth were all good, fender sides would need to ne trimmed as like the jeep cherokee unit.
Sold for @$500. Was set up for a 12,000lb winch and 4 aux lights. Only prob was it had an extra support bar that would have run across the headlights.. Oh well. Keep looking, LOL!

Some sellers are like that & get upset because you plan on using it for a vehicle other than what it was designed for.:sport_box

Also, don't forget the module for it since the switch won't work without it. I never got one and had to use a switch from radio shack. In all honesty I am glad that I did it that way so I can activate the locker whenever I want. It comes in handy with the manual hubs so when in 2wd all I have to do is flip a switch.
