bryAWD's Gen 2.5 - 2000 Endeavor

Hello ExPo,

This is my first time posting, but I have been busy for the past week looking at everyone's 2.5 build threads (and 1G builds, too!). I really enjoy Mitsubishi vehicles, I currently have a 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse, AWD turbocharged currently modified to run 35lbs of boost with E-85 fuel. I currently live at 6,035ft. above sea level, so the turbocharger sure does make it fun and helps with the horsepower loss due to high elevation. I also have another 1991 Eagle Talon AWD which is the same as an Eclipse, which I was meaning to build as a daily driver, but due to title issues and overall bad joo-joo, I decided try and sell it and started to look for something else.

Something with less hassle, more room, more reliable, and can take us camping up in the Rocky Mountains. At first I was looking at Silverados and trucks, but then I thought I'd keep it with good ol' Mitsu and started looking up the Mighty Max (too small) and ended up looking at the Montero's. I was dead set on buying this 90 LWB that was well taken care of, just had no back seats or back interior, but the guy sold it out the day before I was set to look at it. I went to a few dealers and saw a couple Gen III's, but they had issues and I just didn't like the feel or style of them.

A week or so had gone by, and finally this awesome, one-owner (yes!!!) 2000 Montero Endeavor (Endeavor edition only made for 2000 model year) popped up on craigslist at a dealer nearby so I went down to check it out after they had closed. I was very impressed and was dead set on buying it pending a test drive. After waiting until they opened the next morning, I got to hop in the rig and drive it around. I was all smiles, and was quite impressed on how it rode, aside from the brakes needing to be replaced. Everything else looked tip-top!

It has 133,xxx on the clock now, the one previous owner took very good care of the truck, no rust, garaged, and the timing belt bits all done at 129,500, trans fluid replaced at 117,xxx. All work was done by a reputable shop.

Enough text, here's some photos of it at the dealership.

I then tinted the two front windows with a ceramic window film. Matches pretty close to the back privacy glass. I took off the homemade screen covering the grille.

Then I used some vinyl, rubber, and tire treatment to bring back the black rich color of the spare cover

same with the black plastics on the taillights.

Took some windshield pinchweld rust sealing primer and put them on the cargo area trim cover bolts

Got some LED's in to do the interior lighting, thanks to an awesome thread started by jlocster.

and LED really made a difference. Quite a lot brighter, much less power draw, and no heat!

I then refreshed the grille and laid some red vinyl over the faded Mitsu emblem.

As well as tinted the entire windshield in a ceramic 30% film, and removed the V6 badge. I think it looks better without it.

I am also psyched the previous owner put on some nearly new 31" Michelin's on the rig before he traded it in!

I plan on doing an oil change immediately as well as ordering up some replacement pads and rotors...

I don't plan on doing an all-out offroading build, I plan on keeping it a reliable daily driver, good for the mountains and Colorado winters, while maintaining it and keeping it in tip-top shape! Thanks and stay tuned!

Looks pretty clean, but make sure you look for any rust along the body where the running boards connect, salt likes to hang out in there because it never really gets cleaned well.

Thanks eurosonic, I really enjoyed reading through your build thread!

jeep-N-montero, I will have to double check those areas. I am very thankful to live in Colorado, where rust is not an issue! We do not salt the roads during winter, we use sand and gravel. This truck spent its life down in southern Colorado where it stays very hot and dry. Plus, it was garaged!

What about Mag Chloride in Colorado? Doesn't that cause rust?

The truck has been doing very well! I've owned it for a little over a month now, and no issues. I still need to replace the brakes. Taking off the front wheels seems scary to me, I'm used to taking off the 5 lugs and boom there's the brake rotor. Any how to's or advice on how to remove? I also read I need to repack the bearings with grease (and I've also read I do not need to do this .. ?) and there's a seal on the hub that also needs replacing when changing the rotors. I know I also need to customize a GM wrench by shaving down some pins...

Awesome! So, if I purchase new wheel bearings, I will be able to skip all that disassembly, I should be able to just bolt the new one up to my new rotor and install?

not exactly. You still have to pull the hub off of the spindle so that you can unbolt the rotor from the hub. Unless you know/think you need new wheel bearings, I don't know if you need/want to replace.

While it may seem daunting, it isn't a difficult job at all. The most tricky part is setting the preload on the bearings when you put the hub back on. If you do put in new bearings, you will need a special tool (or modify an off the shelf hub socket) to set the preload. So using the old bearings will be easier. You will still need to snug up the old bearings properly, but because the preload was already set, you can almost use a screwdriver to tighten the hub down.

Just leave yourself plenty of time, read the FSM and threads here and 4x4wire, you should be ok.

Thanks for the helpful links and tips, guys. I will be getting all new brake parts in soon and putting them on.

Also, the Mitsubishi alarm and keyless entry is acting funny on my rig. Any newer Chevy keyfob used near the Montero will set it into Panic mode. I disconnected the little horn underneath the hood. I plan on removing it all soon thanks to the guide on the forums and putting in a aftermarket keyless/remote start.

That being said, my door lock buttons from the inside of the truck does not lock the rear door (lift gate). It will only lock with a key from the outside. However, it will unlock the liftgate from the buttons on the door.... But it won't lock it???

Rolled 1,000 miles in the truck so far, and I'm enjoying it. Here's a blurry photo at night at 999.9 miles. The LEDs for the speedo and tach are quite nice.

I think I had a similar problem with the lock on the rear door. Remove the rear panel and check out the locking mechanism. It might need a little bit of lube. Also while you're in there lube up the springs and pivot for the door handle. Mine would occasionally stick and not allow me to close the door properly.

Those leds look really nice. I've been meaning to get some for my panel, but I've been dumping most of money into my damn evo.

on my '99 factory installed "Code Alarm" (dealer) - the alarm would go off randomly, or ANY newer ford pickup alarm would set it off.
I finally found that if ALL 4 memory slots weren't programmed (4 possible remotes), it would go off on it's own.
May be something similar with yours
