Bumper modification legal and safety issues?

This is true, I was able to maintain these with the installation of my aftermarket bumper. I also believe that there are crumple zones built into the frame itself.

There are; for example, on some models you'll see cuts in the frame that are designed to "give" under a certain load. Some of these are also designed to allow/direct the drivetrain to slide (for lack of a better word at the moment) under the passenger compartment.

Another thing you see on some SUVs is styrofoam in the bumpers like you see in cars.

...Given the number of Jeeps I've seen out there with short bumpers to allow for rock crawling I'd say it's not enforced.

Like anything else it depends. Plenty fail inspections for not having it and its been the justification for many stops on the highway, most often resulting in 'fix-it' tickets.

Even my guy that I have had inspections done with for 10 years has turned me away for a crawling bumper. I came back 30 minutes later with two pieces of scrap steel tacked onto the top of the bumper to give me the width and he passed me:sombrero:

I've also been pulled over for it, but given a verbal warning.

Bumper height violation is a minimum $500.00 fine by law here. They must be 4" (maybe 4.5") tall and full width.
