Buy an old rig and hit the dirt for the holiday weekend

Hey Todd,
I thought of you Sat when I went on the ASFIR Wheelers for Wounded run and there were 3-4 Scouts (sorry no early Broncos).
I was the second oldest rig (a 68 Scout 80 was the oldest) and the burb did great.

I really need to get some tall skinny tires on and do something about the inside so we can get back in the dirt playing.

Curious, what are your plans or the suburban? I love that body style, had a 70 and 72 k5...miss them both.

Kurt....
I am watching your Relic Run site and need to get over to Expedition Utah to follow the conversation....my worry is that me & the family are going to Australia for June/July (moving for longer isn't looking good due to insurance issues) and that is mostly likely when you guys are running.
Oh well I plan to have THIS rig a bit longer than my past ones :)

Plans, well the go like this:
get a welder & go camping

build a dual battery setup and camp to test it out with fridge strapped in back

get 4 bucket seats with the rear 2 able to fold flat ,amp some more

gut the interior for sound proof/insulation using latex paint/microspheres/fatmat/refletix, test that camping

build a storage platform with drawers & fridge slide that serves as a sleep base for 1,solo camp in that

Various other bits will get added along the way like CB & Ham radio, wheels & tires (tall & skinny 255/85/16) and PM service.

After next summer I would like Colorado Camper van to pop top the rig so we can sleep the entire family (2 up & 1 below)...that should be perfect.

I have a build thread going in the Domestic section if you want to check it out and feel free to comment.

Great pics. Reminds me of my Arizona days exploring the Bumble Bee/Crown King area. No idea if that's close to where you went? Its been a awhile

I got a novel idea;

Since you are not going to be around for the Relic Run, how about we put something together earlier in our own lovely state for those of us with older iron? I still want to do the Relic Run but I don't have any problem doing something else too. I have four old timers just in my family alone. So what do ya think?

Mickey I am all over that idea.
My son loves the old rigs as much as I do and we also know we need to spend more time exploring Utah (and we know so little of it now).
We have a Spring Break that would work well....March 5th through the 9th. I know north Utah (SLC area) might be too cold then so maybe south Utah?
Hey you know your state, you tell me :)

Hey, my state is the same as yours. I be thinking that we should do something in Arizona. Something of a warmup for the Relic Run in Utah. I don't want to compete with them, but compliment. I too have done very little in Utah. In fact my wife, Mo, and daughter, Ellen, have done a lot more up there. My only experience in Utah was a very wet motorcycle ride through the state. So I didn't get to see much.

Sorry Mikey when you mentioned the Relic Run I thought you were in Az....oops
Yeah I am all about exploring Az as there in plenty I have not seen.
Matter of fact I have only done a little in the Arizona Strip or Oatman/Chloride and such in your area.
KofA is another area south of you that need more of my attention.
Maybe we can put together a 1 week circle of the Grand Canyon that would be a hoot :)

I would really like to check this out, do you know how far you traveled round trip? I want to make sure my rig has the range.

If you pm me your email adrs I can send you google earth files or gps files in another format so you can double check things per your setup...

But that said, we fueled up in Lake Havasu and didn't fuel again until Parker...getting 10mpg or so with a 21 gal tank....pretty much any rig can beat that :)
