Jealous!

Debs,

Have a good, safe trip! I am so jealous on your visit to Petra. I lived in Jordan until I was ten years old. A trip to Petra was a looong 4x4 and horseback slog back in the day. One day I will get back.

Congrats on planning to visit Ethiopia, perhaps the most unique country in Africa and one of the most rarely visited by overlanders.

Post lots of pictures!

guided it is!

guided it is .... i have spent the last 3 days dealing with ethiopian and sudanese embassy officials while the group have been exploring Cairo. Today they at the pyramids; while i am picking up passports!! Petra is one of the most amazing places on earth - and i have been to many places! Ethiopia - everyone gets a little shocked when they get there - certainly nothing like what the media would have us think! Now to deal with ferry to Sudan ..... oh yeah the youngest just turned 60 (that is clients not crew!)

Fun in Addis

Post a note when you get to Addis.

Beyond the obvious recommendation to spring for the Sheraton Addis to clean up and rest up, I can recommend a great restaurant for ingera and dancing.

Sadly, this lovely lady is no longer there, but it is still a lot of fun.

you cannot camp at the sheraton!!!!!

The sheraton is a great place to shower and spend a lazy day by the pool; a bit out of our budget to stay there. Thanks for the offer for a restaurant for Injera but we will get enough of that in Bahir Dar and Gondar - we are looking forward to see if the Cottage is still a fantastic restaurant (or is it fantastic because we always come in from the north and a little sick of ME food :)

In Khartoum staying at the Blue Nile Sailing Club overlooking Lord Kitcheners gun boat! Dying for a beer .......... 3 days until Ethiopia and cold beer on tap!!

Both!

"(or is it fantastic because we always come in from the north and a little sick of ME food"

Bit of both, I would suspect, but who cares.

In any case, "Fasika" off of Bole road is always fun.

So you actually did it ...

The lake crossing, that is. I must say that I had written that one off as "too hard." The only other Sudan transit that I have read about lately actually did most of it by ferry down the Red Sea from Egypt. Another "too hard."

Have a good, safe trip, and skip the "Gonder" wine - just ghastly, and I have very low standards.

Waiting for Godot?

Or Debs to post again?

He may not be posting here, but his blog, linked above, is essential reading for anyone who does not yet know why WA-WA!

They have made it past Nairobi.

Oops!

Apologies to Debs for referring to her as a he!

And a bump to the top. This is, by far, one of the most interesting, and difficult routings, around. Run by some folks who have been around the block a few times! (But sorry, the roads in Zambia are great! Come visit if you want some bad roads!)
