Calling P38 Owners - Interested In A Baja Rack??

There's a distinct lack of options for P38 roof racks. I've been chatting with Baja Rack about options and they may be willing to produce a run of them if there's interest. I'll be posting this on Defender Source, Land Rover Forums, NCLR, and RR.net, but please help spread the word.

Nothing is a done deal at this point, but if we have 5+ genuinely interested people we could make a solid case. Let me know!

I highly doubt you'll get traction from P38 owners. One big issue is the load that the rack mounts can carry. It's very limited. I would get a a Front Runner Outfitters rack. Should they not have the proper hardware get an OEM rack and bolt the FRO rack on it.

Unfortunately because of the issues with failed liners people avoid these trucks. I love mine and would happily replace the engine should it go bad but for now I just stay on top of coolant system and enjoy it. Wish people would just stay on top of their cooling system and make these a classic.

Should you get traction kudos and wish you fun with your rig.

Btw my rack is already at the weight limit and haven't had issues. If I make it full length rack I'll easily go over the limit so I'll keep it short. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1453242893.213010.jpg

Love the enthusiasm. I already have a safety devices rack or I'd be in. Btw, I carry a rtt and awning on my rack, no issues, static load is not an issue, dynamic load nothing is holding that tent...or that dudes tire :)

The failed liner issue isn't unique to p38's and that hasn't stopped discos from being widely used.

P38's are a whole different beast with electronics and air suspension maintenance. Most were in their first ownership where driven by soccer moms that neglect maintenance. I had a DII and it is simpler simpler and to your point why there are more Discos on the road. I don't want to end up on a pissing war about models and track off subject. Bottom line is that the market to much too limited to p38's in accessories because there is simply not much ownership of these in the overlanding and 4x4 world.

Again I would love to see more accessories but if you're going for a custom rack hit up Derek at Urban Off-road that gent has mad chops in fabrication. There are simply not that many p38's out being wheeled.

I don't buy the weight limitations being the issue with demand - look at ANY factory roof rack and they all have limits under 200#. Automakers don't want the liability of you taking an already top-heavy vehicle and throwing 500# on the roof and having it tip over around a slight bend.

I think it's exactly to do with the fact that they P38s just aren't widely used for offroading or expeditions. No one is going to go to the effort of making serious parts without market demand being there. Hell, my lift is cobbled together from OME springs for the Disco front and Defender rear. My personal opinion on P38 vs D2 - those of us who enjoy attempting to traverse the state/country/globe in the world's most unreliable vehicles are a quirky bunch, and I think the unique/quirky styling of the Disco, the Disco's larger rear cargo area, and the daunting electronics of the P38 combine to make it a rare offroading platform. Then you have the chicken/egg scenario where the existing aftermarket support sways more people who were neutral to them both towards the D2 due to aftermarket support.

All that to say - LET'S CHANGE THAT, ONE PART AT A TIME! :sombrero:

It's an awesome platform when it's beefed up and I've been enjoying the hell out of mine. So, who wants an expedition/safari/overlanding/glamping rack for their P38?!?!

Front Runner racks can be ordered full length their construction has no welds and it's very sturdy plus all the cool accessories that can be added is amazing. Is seriously consider going to their show room in SoCal. I made some simple brackets and I can mount my GoPro camera.

Voyager Racks has some nice looking options for the P38.
