Canadian M101 CDN2 camping trailer

Ok, I figured I would start a build thread on my camping trailer. I am going at a slow pace but enjoying it as I go. Wish I could afford to buy one already outfitted the way I want it. But it is about the journey right?

So here it goes... 1992 Canadian M101 CDN2. Purchased from another forum member, who purchased it from another forum member :) IMG_0139.JPG

It has a few rust spots, but over all not bad for a trailer that is 24 years old.

Looks like serial number 94 (out of 1700 or so I believe). Anyhow the PO helped me hook it up, and I started towing it home. Pulled very nice.

I like how the tarp matches the camo pattern on the trailer body. Although I am most likely going to paint the body black to match the tow vehicle. My daughter likes the camo and it is growing on me so we will see. I did tell her that I would keep the tarp camo even if the body is black. That is until I fabricate a lid (if that ever happens).

So first thing I did was to add a few Thule bars that I found on Craigslist. This will be an ongoing common thread as it seems I am finding everything on Craigslist. (In fact although I got this from another member, it was also posted in my local Craigslist)

So here are a couple photos with the bars in the high and low settings on the bars. The bars were purchased with the idea of adding a RTT.

A few nice things about the trailer was a previous owner had it registered in VA. So it already had a VA vin. Made registrating it a breeze. It already had the 24v to 12v done. The drop leg was swapped out for a longer M416 (I believe) trailer leg so it sits more level. The safety chains were also swapped out for cables (chains would have been fine, either way). A previous owner also fabricated some PVC pipes to creat bows for the tarp. So it got me a little ahead than if I had purchased a straight military trailer.

I hit up some of the more heavily rusted areas with a wire brush and put some primer down. I purchased som POR15 but haven't gotten that far yet. I figure I will do a bit of what I would like to have done to the trailer, before taking care of the paint.

Next I purchased some wheels off Craigslist to match my tow vehicle. I know I needed adapters to make them fit. What I couldn't decide was if I wanted to change the hubs to match the tow vehicle and add adapters to clear the hub center, or get the adapters that change the bolt pattern.

Had to measure to make sure what I was ordering would fit.

I was worried that since my original trailer brake drums/hubs had lug bolts instead of lug studs and nuts that the wouldn't work. The person assisting me confirmed and said I needed to get their retrofit adapter kit to be able to use their adapters.

But when I went to install them, the lug bolts mounted up without a problem.

Doing it this way will allow me to switch back to the original rims and tires without and real trouble.

Not sure why some of the photos started posting sideways. The attachment is also the wrong part number. Not sure why it attached that way, and why I can't delete it. Crazy...

I also found a RTT that I got from another forum member (thanks Chris!) Naturally the stock brackets didn't fit the cross bars. Sad thing is when I went to pick up the RTT the brackets wouldn't fit my original load bars. Chris helped me assemble some brackets after a trip to Home Depot. Naturally those brackets were still too small for the Thule Xsporter load bars. A buddy of mine helped me fabricate some brackets to fit.

Try putting the photos on Photo Bucket and posting the link. I have to do it that way on another forum and that way people can move through the photos as they want and it will keep your entire build for the post.

Thanks. I tried using another picture hosting site and the results are shown above. Ha. I will try again.
