Canyon Sin Nombre, Apr. 5th, 2009, Quick Day Trip

A small group of us decided to make a day trip to an area we had not been before, Canyon Sin Nombre. This area includes the mud caves, Diablo dropoff, Palm Spring, the marsh area and a few other neat places. This was the first trip for our new dog, Ellie. We had no idea how she would do on a long drive or offroading. She did great. It looked like she really enjoyed running and playing. I think her favorite place was the mud caves, which we went in about a half mile. At Palm Spring, there was a broken down Bronco that we towed out to the main road. Here a some pics from the trip.

From what I read, this is called folded rock. Very cool looking,

There is a lot more water in the marsh then I would have ever though. Keep in mind this is the middle of the desert.

cool to see another dog on the trail. Mine were at Carrizo Plains this weekend.

I was at the Diablo Dropoff and Mud Cave area about one month ago. Am I the only one that was kind of disappointed at the Dropoff? It wasn't that scary- certainly not scary enough to warrant such a sinister sounding name. The dropoff near The Slot is way scarier.

BTW-who's more annoying? The safety police or the leash police?

Cool.

I agree, Heart Attack hill (after the the slot (or squeeze)) is much scarier then Diablo Dropoff. Maybe they were talking about the overlook and not the actual road. Come up to the overlook at night, without knowing it was there and that would be pretty scary. :Wow1:

Really don't get these leash laws. First, we are in the middle of the f'n desert. Second, I am responsible for my dog, which when needed I will hold her or leash her. If there is no danger to her or others around her, she should be able to explore some. I keep an eye on her and if she poops some place, I'll clean it up.

I am sure most of these damn laws came about due to UNresponsible owners. Let's outlaw them?

Fine....

I'm not acting like the 'leash police', I'm simply passing along information posted as a rule and regulation of the park. I was up around Sheep's Canyon around a year ago with another guy who had his dogs off-leash. The ranger stopped and ticketed the dogs owner for not having his dogs on leash.

As a dog owner myself, I'm respectful of the laws that pertain to me and my dog.

And it's not about you controlling your pet.

Why aren't dogs allowed on trails or wilderness areas?

There are many reasons. Many animals in the Park react to the scent of a canine, reading only: predator. Although your dog may be friendly, many of the animals that live in a habitat will avoid areas where a predator scent has been left. This means they may not be able to search for food or find safety in their usual places. In addition, many diseases may be spread either to your dog from wildlife or vice versa. Some of these diseases like plague and Lyme disease are dangerous to humans as well.

I guess it's up to you to decide which rules apply to you and which ones don't....

I just thought I was passing along information you may not have been aware of. You know, doing you a favor... Maybe even saving you from a costly ticket...

Do as you wish, I'll shut up.

I hope you didn't take my comments the wrong way. I was not directing them at you but commenting on the ABDSP info. It seems so many laws are made up for some of the dumbest reasons. Case in point, CA banning Black cars. Come on!

As for your posted info, I was not aware of the leash laws for the state parks so this is good info. I was also not aware of the reasoning behind it. Thanks for the heads up.

Sad part is, these types of things will limit some of the places I travel or how many times I might visit some place. I am sure the gas station was happy with the $30 of gas I bought, not needing it but to support the local area that I travel in. I think there should be some rules in place for specific areas (camp grounds, sensitive area, dangerous areas, etc.) but to not allow our furry friends to be off leash for ten's of thousands of acres of CA is rediculous.

Oh well. Again, thanks for the info, since I did not know.

Thanks for putting up the pics Mike. It's been a long time since I have been there and your pics brought back some good memories.
