Capstan winches

Here's a capstan application that baffled me. Cable, not rope, and stored on the capstan drum.

I've seen references to capstan winches that use cable, or maybe he's just storing the cable on the capstan: maybe he has the rope stored elsewhere, and the cable is an 'extension'? It would take up a lot less room than 100' of rope...

Wow!
I would have never thought about putting a capstan winch on a vehicle. Nor do I have any desire to actually try and use one on the trail, well maybe once for the experience! How much would it just suck to get a wrap! You would also have to ensure that you could always be standing in front and off to the side of the vehicle to manage the tail end, right? – No wait, you could use one that has a self-tailer, then rig up a block on the driver’s side corner of the front bumper and you could operate it from the driver’s seat -- hey this might actually be pretty cool!

If you’re really serious, I would recommend applying a powered marine capstan winch to your vehicle. They are 12 volt or hydraulic and can handle incredible loads.
