Cargo Space: 2006 MKiii vs LR3 vs RRS

With all rear seats removed, which has the most cargo space? I assume the MKiii wins but how much larger is it than a LR3 or RRS? Let's use 2006 for the comparison.

I found the "stats" of cargo volume etc online, but nothing comparing them without the rear seats.

Can a normal size person ~ 5'11 fit laying down without going diagonal?

In the LR3, the seats fold flat which offers a lot of space.
In my LR4, with the seats folded flat, I can lay down straight... I'm a little over 6.2

With the middle row of seats and the rear (7 seat package seats) folded down in the LR3/4 yes, a 5'11" person can easily lay down. In terms of cargo space its LR3/4, MKIII, RRS.

I have an LR3, and we sleep in the back fairly often - especially in bear country. A full double air mattress fits in the back with no special effort. As axels mentions above, just fold the seats flat and make your bed.

The LR3/4 is also very square, making that space actually usable as opposed to angled greenhouses that may have the volume but aren't as friendly for storage.

LR3/4 by a long shot. You can't beat the fold flat seats and completely square interior configuration.

Even without folding down the seats, the rear space is quite generously sized.

All this will fit, with the rear seats UP and occupied with Passengers

Note: I opt to put the spare in the rear for better access when offroading. The stock location under the rear bumper is very hard to access when off road.

nwoods, that sir, is one impressive packing job. My only question is how long did it take you to figure out the proper sequence to make it all fit!

Yes Jim I do! Don, one if my more esoteric skills is spatial awareness. My career as an Architect and misspent youth playing Tetris seem to have prepared me well for being an amateur Load Master :)

Believe it not, I was able to fit a similar amount of gear inside a Jeep LJ with rear seats occupied with kids!

The RRS has a slanted rear door that really cuts down on cargo space. You want an Lr3/4 or L322 for overlanding.

The l322 rear seats don't really lay flat, and the floor isn't really flat. They fold up and forward. Maybe 60" from the tailgate to the seats folded. To remove is sort of a pain too.

We have an LR3 and L322. I love them both. The LR3 wins in the cargo and passenger versatility department, buy a good bit. The L322 is just amazing to drive. It is no slouch in interior space though. I was shocked to see how close the internal volume and measurements were to the sport. I don't know how it translates to actual packing etc. I only know I felt a little cramped in the sport. I convinced the mrs. that we needed the big one :) It was probably more subjective because width is very close in the back seat etc. The sport is very nice and I would not argue any of the three are better than another one because they each excel in a slightly different area.

If I did not need the third row and extra cargo volume at this stage (three young kiddos and vacations etc.) I would be fine with just owning two L322 (one supercharged for the wife and one lifted with skids etc for me). However, the LR3/4 is a must for me right now. The LR4 or a diesel Discovery 5 might be in my future if I can't find a way to fully skid the L322.

With my D2 I built a sleeping platform (it's somewhere on this site...too lazy to search right now) and removed the rear seat. The platform folds forward, so with the front seats as close to the dash as possible (rear seat is removed), I can fit a full size air mattress and sleep inside. I also have an SUV tent which makes camping quite luxurious (I don't bother with the tent when it's just me hunting).

So the fact that the LR3 has fold-flat seats is pretty huge. I would love to have a back seat when needed. Now the OTHER reason I built the platform was to allow room for the fridge...which I would need to figure out whichever way we go. She really prefers the interior of the MKiii to the LR3 and the way it drives...and it's probably going to end up being her daily driver for the time being, and just a weekend vehicle for me. Soon (post wedding expenses) we'll go back to 3 vehicles...I get whatever we decide for her now and she gets something else...

I found a "built" white LR3 that she immediately nixed. No "boy cars" allowed if she has to daily drive it (the snorkle is clearly a bit much for her drive to work). She also says that there has been an exponential increase to random guys hitting on her since she started driving my D2...so maybe she's on to something...keep it stock looking!
