Carson River and Virginia City, Nevada

Explored the Carson River Canyon and the area around Virginia City, Nevada today.

Some friends and I drove the historic route of the Virginia and Truckee Railway through the Carson River Canyon, just east of Carson City. The first photo is of a tight switchback that required a three-point turn in my full-size truck. It could have been a fast trip a couple of hundred feet down to the river. No problems for us, though.

After lunch on the riverbank, we continued into Moundhouse. If you are familiar with the HBO TV show "Cathouse" you will know of the Moonlight Bunny Ranch. It is located in Moundhouse. We did not have time to stop today.

After crossing US 50, we again picked up the railroad right of way. This portion of the roadbed is currently undergoing reconstruction. Within a couple of years, original steam trains will be running on this route. In this photo you can see the bundles of railroad ties for the project.

In the distance, you will also see a band of wild horses --mustangs -- grazing on the hillside. We watched them for nearly an hour. At one point they were only about 40 feet away from our trucks.

We finished the day with a tasty adult beverage at the Bucket o' Blood Saloon, then a walking tour of the historic buildings in Virginia City before heading home.

Hey I know that spot behind Moundhouse!

We have several times began the morning with a few hours at the shooting range, dropped down to the river and explored the old mill and casted a few lines during the afternoon. Fun spot.

Nice trip!
