Cedro Peak, NM

My buddy Izzy and I headed to a local trail called Cedro Peak. It's just outside of Albuquerque in the southern foothills of the Sandia mountains. Neither of us expected much snow to be on the ground but to our surprise there was about a foot in some spots. We had a blast.

We weren't able to get all the way up the trail because Izzy doesn't have off-road tires on his Silverado and wasn't able to get up a steep, snow covered hill.

That mud is the worst part about melting snow. Fun time though I'm sure.

When we started the trail at around 10, the temperature was in the high 30's and there was no mud. While headed down around 1, the temperature was in the high 40's and the snow started to melt. Then came the mud. :smiley_drive:

My old stomping grounds, I lived in the tiny neighborhood in the center left in the pic below. That straight line to the top of the peak in your 4th photo was a power line, don't know when the poles were removed. Our nickname for it was the Beacon Mountain, because in the late '50s (?) it had a light beacon on a tower that lit up the place like a lighthouse at night. Air Force people would have to explain what that was for...

1990-ish panorama from Cedro's summit, looking northwest.

It's the 3rd time I've been on the trail. They just recently put a fence blocking off the road or whatever it is to the top of the peak. I know that used to be a off-trail obstacle some folks liked to play on.

I like the fact that there are so many other trails that branch of the main. A lot of exploring possibilities.
