Center support bearing aka "carrier bear" who's had to change theirs??

So last week I started to hear some squeaking coming from underneath my truck. So I crawled under it and started giving it a once over starting at front diff and working back. Thats when I found exesssive play in my carrier bearing:mad:. I gave the drive shaft a shake back and forth and it squeaked just like I was hearing while driving.
Having 86k on my truck I'm not that supprised I have heard people on Tacomaworld having the same problem. So the plan is to drop the drive shaft soon and replace the carrier bearing and all the ujoints (with ones with zero fittings so I can add more grease as needed) while I'm at it. Jake (jeverich) will be bringing me up some parts when he comes back up here later in the month ( its a lot cheaper to get parts at Napa in Washington than at our local Napa). Anyone else have to change theirs out yet on any of the different Toyota models?

Also tossing the idea around of doing a write up. Just seeing if there is any interest :snorkel: before we dive into it!?!??!?!!?!?

A lifted truck will absolutely wear through them faster, particularly 2nd Gen Tacomas which are known to have some rear driveline vib issues. I put a new carrier bearing on my 96 1st gen @ ~140k, ~75k with the lift. I did one on my 04 1st gen ~120k, ~90k on the lift.

Or get a one piece drive shaft and never have to worry about it again.

Less chance of getting vibrations too, that are common with the 2nd gens.

X2. On my 06 I had a one piece built with a doublecardan I pulled from a 3rd gen 4runner and reused the diff flange side from my stock DS. No more vibes and no more carrier bearing.

I too would consider going with a custom 1-piece driveshaft, should take care of all problems. Ron

If I recall, there was a thread called something like 'wookie strength carrier bearing mod' that detailed the replacement of the factory CB with a really stout version from McMaster Carr or someplace similar.

I have had a lift on my truck now for close to 5 years I have the toytec CB drop spacers on my truck too. I did see a thread about that using that different stronger replacement, but I don't think I really would need that or a one piece shaft. I honestly don't really notice that much vibes. The only thing that made me notice it was the loud squeaking. So I'll just replace it reuse my drop spacer and call it good. If it lasts another 86k I will be happy.

Just spent half of the day putting LEDs into my headache rack after getting clipped by a semi a few days ago...

I'll price out everything and shoot you a text.
