My wife and I left our home in Baja California Sur for a few days of camping. Our plan was to try a new-to-us route over the mountains in Comondú to Loreto, find a beach to camp at, then cross the peninsula back to the Pacific Coast through La Purisima.
Not everything went as planned... but that's to be expected.
The 26 miles of off pavement driving from San Jose Comondu to San Javier proved slower than expected, taking us 4 hours to complete. There were a couple challenging spots for us in our camper, but nothing we couldn't manage in 4low. It was just consistently too rough for us to proceed with any speed. Good thing there were beautiful desert views the entire way.
San Jose Comondu and San Javier both have historic Missions to check out. San Javier also has some restaurants and shops.
I wanted to camp at a beach north of Loreto I had seen on Google Earth. I could see tracks leading down to the cove on the satellite imagery, so we gave it a try. The track followed an arroyo with some cool rock formations and nice views, but as we got closer to the beach the track forked off to locked gates and dead ends. Eventually, I admitted defeat, returned to the highway and proceed to Santispac campground in Bahia Concepcion. We camped here for 2 nights. It is beautiful and the nearshore islands make for some fun Kayaking, birding, and snorkeling.
On our way home we chose to cross the peninsula through La Purisima. This route has a longer off pavement section at 37 miles, but it consists of a lot more smoother sections than the Comondu route and we finished it in a couple hours. La Purisima is where we get back on pavement and you can find small stores, jug-fuel, or a mechanic if you need it. We stopped off west of town for a quick dip in the river before carrying on to highway 1-53 to finish our loop.
