Yep, my parents have a TDI Passat and TDI Golf. My mother was recently complaining that diesel was 50¢ to 60¢ more than regular unleaded. Until I pointed out that not only did the VW gas engines require premium, which was only 5¢ to 10¢ cheaper than diesel, but also that they were getting 42 to 45 mpg instead of the 30 mpg the gas engine was rated for.
Sure, the Golf was about $2500 more up front than the gas version and that would buy a lot of gas to make up the difference. But as you say, the power and fact that you can practically drive all day without stopping make travel very nice.
