Changing Alternators-What is necessary to use a higher amp alternator.

I have a Dodge that came with a 170 amp alternator, the 180 amp was part of a package my truck doesn't have. One the other hand, my work car (which is also a Dodge) came with a 220 amp alternator.

Could I change my 170 to a 180 or 220 without any other modifications?

If it's a modern truck, you won't need any other modifications for that much of an increase in amperage, assuming the mounting and harness plugs are the same.

On my 33-year-old Land Cruiser, I went from a 55 amp alternator to 200 amp. I had to replace the stock ammeter with a volt meter, delete the stock external voltage regulator, and do some minor wiring (for the new internal VR). I also put significantly larger diameter (smaller gauge) charging and ground cables to the battery.

I have been told by many, many places that when swapping to a higher amp alternator that you should also upgrade the wiring cable and also run an inline fuse

What year is your Dodge?

My 2004 only came with a 136 amp unit........and I am also looking for a replacement

Found this info......

Cummins has a ambulance package on some 5.9 appliciations, which have a 220A Denso alternator.

The Denso part number is 421000-7001
The Dodge part number is 4801313AC

Denso confirmed that it was indeed a 220A alternator.

Rated output - 12V, 220A
2 Point Characteristics - 95A min @ 1600rpm, 193A min @ 2500rpm

Output volts -15.0V
Field current - 8.0A

So with a ratio of ~3.3 (crank pulley (7.872") to alternator pulley(2.360"))

@700rpm engine idle - Alternator rpm = 2310
@1100rpm high idle start - Alternator rpm = 3630
@1500rpm high idle top speed - Alternator rpm = 4950

So this shows that at engine idle the alternator is capable of outputting almost 190A.

Denso's are very good quality and are around $350

I was looking at the two factory alternators for my '92 f-350. the only difference between the stock and high output model was the pulley size.
