Cheap Blitz jerry cans

Would it be a "bad idea" to save the $ and buy the ubiquitous $7 Blitz plastic jerry cans and put them on my roof rack for a backroads adventure?
I have a 200 mile offroad cruising range on my Cherokee XJ, so there won't be many trips when I'll need the extra gas, but I do have one in mind. $80 for a Scepter with spout seems a bit much for something I might only use once.

Gas cans

I carried A plastic gas can in my roof rack on my xj and on one of my trips my wife says to me DO YOU SMELL GAS? yea I do the can was about half a year old the gas was running all over the roof of my jeep it sucked. Just from rubbing it got a hole in it. Never agian. I carry the steel jerry can -35-45$ and use a super sihon to transfer fuel hope this helps

Thanks for fun links. One link had Pinz shopping, always fun. The other had the history of the Blitzkrieg and jerry cans.

EI is out of the new cans, and the price of the used ones with a spout and gasket is about the same as a new Wedco CARB compliant with spout, so Wedco it is.

Longmont? Did you see Robert Adams on Art 21 season 4?

That does help, thanks. I won't regret spending the dough.

I'm not sure of the rules on this forum, but since I know Mario is a member, here it goes...
Adventure Trailers cars both cans and holders. I think he and All J Products just designed one to hold either the Blitz or NATO style. I've got the old can mounts on my All J tire rack (Australian?) and they work great. Long before I met Mario and Quinn, I bought two Army Surplus NATO style cans. They're actually different from each other but both have never leaked and are soo much easier to open than the Blitz.

My biggest suggestion is: get a long jiggle siphon to get away from the spout. With a spout you're holding the can, with a siphon, get it going, walk around. No lift-and-hold.

I prefer the scepter cans, they can be had for about $40 for fuel and $30 for water. Plus the super siphon is really great and cheap, around $10. My 2 cents:1888fbbd:

Well I think the Jerry cans are the best. The sceptors while nice have one flaw. When they heat up in the sun the really expand! The Jerry cans expand but 1/10th what the sceptors do. Just an observation. Other than that I do love the sceptors. I have two I use on my long distance snowcat operations.

Just throwing my 2 cents in. I found Scepter fuel cans at Checker Auto (Kragen/Schucks) for 15 bucks. They're not the NATO style, but they are much much nicer than the plastic blitz cans. I used 4 fuel, 1 water Scepters on my trip to Alaska. I ended up not using my metal blitz can since it took forever to transfer.

I ended up with some nicely aged NATO cans from Expedition Imports. They look really cool, actually. They're painted dark green. I'm wondering if I should paint them a light tan so as to reflect some of the desert sun I'm anticipating? I'll be putting them on a roof rack.
