Planned for introduction in 2013, it would be the first Detroit passenger-vehicle diesel since the 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD sport-utility, and the first diesel car from Detroit since the 1980s.
A U.S. diesel Cruze has been the subject of heavy speculation, but was unconfirmed until now.
"I drove it the other day. It is great," Akerson said in an interview with USA TODAY. "These new diesels are quiet. Should make it in the low- to mid-40s, and that's with an automatic," the CEO said, referring to the likely fuel economy rating with an automatic transmission.

There is no excuse for Jeep not to produce a US diesel. Maybe this will push them along?

The new 2012 Jeep Cherokee goes on sale in New Zealand this month with a new diesel engine option and a range of upgrades.

The 2012 Jeep Cherokee is available in NZ in a single specification level – the high grade Limited. It goes on sale with a choice of diesel or petrol engine variants.
As well as the familiar 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine which produces 151 kW @ 5,200 rpm and 314 Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm, the Cherokee now offers the new 2.8 DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder Common-Rail Diesel (CRD) engine which produces 147kW at 3600 rpm and 460 Nm of torque at 1600 rpm.

The new diesel engine offers improved performance and economy with 13% more power over the previous model yet uses 12% less fuel. Jeep’s quoted combined fuel consumption figures for the Cherokee diesel are 7.9 L/100km and 206g/km CO2.

It's interesting the Cherokee comes with the 2.8 for a diesel in Aus and NZ, while the Grand Cherokee has the 3.0 for a diesel in both Aus and NZ.

I wonder how much longer before the 2.8 is completely gone due to emissions requirements.. ?

This doesn't seem to be much of an issue here in the States where I'm still rolling around in my almost stock '01 Sport Wrangler.

My understanding is the 2.8 won't pass the new Euro emissions, and absolutely won't pass diesel requirements in the US.

So for the export market, at least, Jeep will have to move away from the 2.8 diesel, to, presumably, the 3.0 (which does pass euro and US).
I'm watching closely to see when they'll offer the 3.0 in a Wrangler somewhere.

Now if only the 3.0 would come to the US on a crate, with a flywheel and bellhousing for a manual tranny, and a stand alone computer!!!!!! Sigh.

Well, certainly in Europe. The Grand Cherokee gets VM Motori's 3.0L V6 this year. Fiat's MultiJet II technology helps the engine have better emissions performance, and still produce 400 ft-lbs of torque.

There are rumors floating around since 2010 that Fiat is preparing a version of this engine for use in USA. My guess is that the Jeep factory would not put an engine with this much torque into the Wrangler. The Grand Cherokee, on the other hand, does have the option of the 465 ft-lb SRT8. So Jeep knows what to do to the Grand to handle this much torque.

I doubt we'll see the diesel Grand Cherokee until Chrysler finds other uses for the engine. The RAM 1500 would be a good fit. When Dodge starts importing the Fiat Ducato van to compete with the Mercedes Sprinter in late 2012, it will likely have a V6 diesel.
