Decided to officially break in my new Rubicon this weekend with a run out to Chiva Falls. It was a beautiful day, sunny and topping out in the high 80's. There was a bit of wind, but that didn't really bother us all that much. Chiva is a very popular trail, and with the exception of two dirt bikes, we didn't come across a single other vehicle out there all day. Very odd for a beautiful Saturday.
We met at a Cricle K which is the starting point for ANY group run to the falls.
The trail is 8 miles into the Rincons off of Reddington road and is a fairly rough trail. The Rubi proved that we should be expediting a lift and tires as she was belly scraping quite often. It didn't help that I had two coolers, 5 gallons of water, and 4 burly adults in the vehicle at 15 psi.
There is one spot on the trail called Three Feathers that is the real big obstacle with 3 main lines to take (4 really and countless combination lines). We got everyone down this part and continued on to the falls.
There was standing water at the falls and at the pools but nothing was running. Its awesome to come out during snow melt or after a monsoon and see the falls really flowing.
We turned around and stopped off in the wash under some shade trees to grill up lunch and chat for a while before heading back out.
After lunch we side tracked over to the pools.
On the way out, a few guys got a bit more adventurous and took some more difficult lines at Three Feathers. The guy in the orange JK is crazy! He took a tough line and only needed one slight tug from a winch to pop over an 18" ledge he was up against. A truly admirable feat.
Yours truly went the "easy" way, which still requires staying on the correct line.
All in all it was a good day. The Rubi has some new undercarriage scrapes and dents, but no body damage. I was amazed at how well she handled herself and can see many happy years together.
