Here are a few shots from my trip to the Chiricahua mountains in SE Arizona last weekend. We even came across a flock of wild turkeys. They are in the process of repopulating the mountain range with turkeys from Mexico. They have blue faces (and spoke spanish of course).

Heading out:

Sweet! I am heading out to the Chiricahuas for the first time at the end of May. Can't wait.

Those turkeys don't seem to mind people.

The Turkeys are being transplanted from Mexico to repopulate the area. They are currently protected so they havn't been hunted. Thats probably why they don't seem to mind being approached.

The National Monument is on the North end of the range. That's where we were hiking in Echo canyon. We camped about 30 mins south of there in Western slope canyon called Turkey Creek. Let me know if you want any more details like GPS coords or anything else. Happy to help.

Here's a link to the Photobucket album for the rest of the pictures.

I have to ask . . . what's in that yellow Scepter can? Is it feeding fuel to something?

Yepper. :luxhello: The King Kamper has a Webasto Diesel heater in it. The night temps were in the high 30s and it was my wife's first trip in the camper. The heater pumps directly from the Scepter can. 5 gals will run the heater for aprox 110 hours. Pretty sweet. I ran it at night while we slept and kept the tented area around 60 degrees not even running very hard.

..there is so much to see down in the SE corner of AZ and into SW NM! Gotta love the Islands in the Sky.

Indeed, those are not the typical AZ turkeys we see up north. We have the Merriam's spieces in the Prescott, Williams, Flagstaff area. Here's an artical from AZGFD:

Thanks for the AZGFD article. I didn't know they also released turkeys in the Catalina mountains just North of Tucson. Very cool. :jump:
