Christmas Valley/Fort Rock Nov.7-9

We ended up getting over to CV around 3pm on Friday. It was a nice drive over and we stopped a few times just for fun. After we checked into our motel we went and looked at the property that we are thinking about buying. It looked great so I think we might buy it.
We saw about 18 deer right at dusk eating in one of the Alphalfa fields. We then eat and hung out in the motel room for the evening.
We got up early on Saturday and grabbed some breakfast at the Lake Terrice Resturant and motel then headed out to the property again to take another look at it and wonder around. The temp. was about 60 degrees most of the day. We wanted to take the back way into Lost Forest off of the CV hwy. We found a 2 track road that had a marker that said 6121. Yeah, well after several hours and things just not adding up we knew something was wrong with our map or thier road so we turned around. We were way out in the middle of no where and the road was getting pretty rough so we didn't want to take any chances of having to walk out. Me using a cane would have been pretty slow going on that rough ground. Once we got out to the hwy again, we double checked the road number and yes it did say 6121. But there was just know way it could have been. Well it was about time to try to meet up with Lucy FJ55 out at the sand dunes so we drove out there at around 4pm. Didn't see them anywhere so we headed back to town and got treated to some hail and a lightening storm that was just awesome. We got back to the motel around 6:30pm with a pizza and eat then relaxed after spending so many hours bouncing around in the Jeep. It was a great day even if we didn't know where we were most of the day.
Sunday we ended up sleeping in a little and didn't get on the road until about 10am. We went out to the Dunes again and looked for Lucy FJ55 again and didn't find them. So we went out Lost Forest rd until we hit 6121 coming from that direction. We needed to find out what had happened the day before. Well after a few hours we hit the Hwy. It wasn't marked coming from the South. The road that we had taken on Sat. had been mismarked and it should have been where we came out on Sunday. The south end of the to roads were about 5 or 6 miles apart. Someone goofed up big time when they marked the roads. So if you want to take 6121 from the Christmas Valley Hwy to Lost Forest Rd or north to where it hits Fredricks Butte Road. Drive past the 2 track that has the marker 6121 and continue east for another 5 or 6 miles and you will see a well used road that heads north. That would be the one you want.
I do want to go back to the road/trail that we had been on, on Sat. to see where it goes, but not without another vehicle along. That would have been just to long of a hike out for gimpies like me.
After we came out on to the CV hwy from 6121 we headed West and then North on Fossel Lake rd. then W. on Lost Forest rd. then N. on Millican then West on Sink Ln. to Derricks Cave Rd, then into Fort Rock. Then North on Cabin Lake rd. Then West on the Forest Road that runs along the North boundy to the Cabin Lake Campground. It is 19 miles West and SW to hwy 31 and it comes out at approx. mile post 17 on hwy 31 SE of Lapine. During that 19 miles we saw 35 deer which brought the total of deer for the weekend to over 145+ That was the most deer I have ever seen in such a short time. They were just all over in the evening time.
We then headed home. The Will. pass was rain, foggy, and dark as always. But we got home about 8PM.
We didn't play on the dunes this trip because we wanted to do more exploring. What we found was even more roads and trails to explore come next spring. I think was probably our last trip over there for the winter. We'll see! Famous last words. LOL
Both Mrs. Rupe and I had a great time and can't wait for May to get here to lead a trail run over in one of the best places to experance the High Deserts of Oregon. Come join us next May. later Rupe
The weather was sunny off and on, Rain for about an hour on Sunday. There was a hail storm on a small strip going into the Dunes area Sat. night. The temp. was between 45 and 60 during the day and it wasn't cold enough to freeze at night in town any way. But it was chilly at night and I'm glad we opt out and stayed in a motel. Although if we had had alot a people with us and enough wood we would have camped with everyone. The pass had a little snow left over from the snow plows, but there was nothing but rain at nighton the way home. The way over it was nice and sunny all the way over. Once again we forgot our camera so we didn't get any pictures of the trip. I think we forget that thing about 2/3 rds of the time. Bummer, rupe

Thanks for the trip report, Rupe. Glad you guys had a good time, and thanks a whole lot for that head's up about the road marking. Kind of lame for the people in charge to have screwed that up.
