The 6.0L engine had a bunch of problems, especially in the first two years. It was released in 2003. This truck might be fine, and I like the idea of building off existing frame. However, for my money I'd look for a low mileage 2002 with the 7.3L engine or a 2005/2006 after most of the bugs were worked out.

I agree about the 6.0. Also I'm not enamored w/ Ford's low shock mounts, placement of e-brake cable hanging below the rear axle and 7 pin hitch connector below the bumper which gets torn up when crossing washes.

but the flatbed /exoskeleten build potential is cool. Sort of reminds me of the Turtle V build:
