I've been watching that thing on CL for the past few months. The price hasn't budged.

Very cool and unique FJ!

It's a 1983, but told me he has it titled and registered as a 1973. Said that allows it out of smog testing in CA. Guess that's true, but not sure how you do that. Legally. What else is he hiding?

Just not something that I was interested in dealing with. Oh, that and the $20k.

that happens all the time.

Most times I've found through certain situations (i.e. importation) that it ends up being completely legal.

This is not a dealbreaker, just icing on the cake, cuz you can put ANY motor you want in it. CA does not have an inspection AT ALL for pre-smog vehicles. the title is all they go off of. If it says 1973, you couldn't convince them its not.

Only reason a pre-smog vehicle would ever be inspected is if the vin tags were stolen/lost (when does that happen??..lol) and the Highway patrol inspects it and re-assigns the year for some reason. (which won't happen cuz they'll just look @ the title that says 1973.)

OR

If you were financing with a credit union and they inspected it in due course. Though in this case you'd have to have a LC nut that you've pissed off somehow, in order for them to raise such a obscure red flag. Other wise they'll not know the difference.

thats been my experience. :)
