ClampTool

I bought one of these things at the SoCal Off-Road Expo.

I've used it a couple of times already - I LOVE IT!!! I figured I'd post it up, beacuse I had never seen or heard of it until the show.

I got an old CBR pouch from work the other day, and thought it was perfect to put together an "Emergency Hose Repair Kit".

The pouch holds:
  • The ClampTool
  • Wire for the ClampTool
  • Wire Cutters for the ClampTool
  • and Rescue Tape

Pretty cool, I thought... :kewl:

Good find

I've carried one of these clamp tools for many years. Have never used it on the trail, but have around the shop to make oddball clamps. Works great. One severe limitation is the need to swing the tool in an arc when you make a clamp. Limits its usefulness in confined areas like the engine compartment.

The rescue tape is also darned handy to have. It is available under a variety of brand names. I have also used this several times.

Thanks for the suggestion to put it all together into a kit. I'll be borrowing that idea.

I have also been carrying one of these in my Race Chase tool bag, which doubles as my Long Off Road Trip tool bag. I've also got two 1 lbs. spools of Safety wire (.020" and .032") as well as Safety Wire Pliers. You can make a lot of things from Safety Wire. I haven't gone on a trip without it in ~20 years.

If you do opt to carry Safety Wire Pliers, be sure always bend the trimmed-off twist 180* back on itself. Those cut ends are exceptionally good for opening up skin & making it leak. Those who've used Safety Wire in their jobs probably already know this, I'm mentioning this for those who don't.
