It was there when we went through also.

Still on the way down Mosquito Pass

I'm not sure what the story was behind this truck. I was expecting to see someone hitchhiking on the way out.

Hi Jason,

Finally got around to sorting thru our Colorado pics from this year's Great Divide and LR national rally events, and found this nice one of our chance encounter on Imogene Pass. Looks like you guys enjoyed your time there...was a perfect time to be there, wasn't it?

Looking forward to hearing about your plans for Newfoundland/Labrador...

Nice Montage. Yep, Colorado's nice when you get out, and into the thick of it.

Been here all my life, and alot of neat places exist-you just have to get there is all. Even know where a stage stop/livery still stands near Canon City. It's nice n tucked away. Alot, and I do mean alot, of old towns that popped up, and died quick, but reading of their history they can be found (have done so).

Please tell me about the deflector on the truck top between the pop up and truck. Where did you get it?

I relied heavily on this book. I highly recomend it. (I can't remember what retailer I got it from)

I also have the northern edition but none of the roads I drove ended up being in this area.

OH you are SO making me home sick!

Funny, the book web page http://www.4x4books.com/cb.htm that you posted...

That first picture, the one with the ZJ, that is me, and my mother, standing next to my folks Jeep. I was driving Chuck that day, and parked back up where he took the photo from. Kind of nostalgic to remember that trip.

I used to live in Keystone (about ten miles from Breck) and I have driven all but one of those roads you mentioned... Looks like a GREAT trip!

By the way, anyone interested in a trip to CO, the Fun Treks Guide books are an absolute must. Check Wells is very detailed in his explanations of the trails. Also he tends to rate them in a way that the novice to moderate explorer would agree with the difficulty levels, so if you are more extreme then you may find his ratings a little easy for your taste.

Super trip report, thanks. I think I am going back this year to Ouray, and if I can I will go to the National Mercedes Benz trip to Ouray in 2011.

Great writeup, Im from Denver and cant wait to get up there and see some of those trails, maybe this summer?

If you can't get to Ouray, then atleast get out to Breckenridge and Keystone. There are some wonderful trails in that area, and the views are amazing. Not to mention it is only an hour to an hour and a half for you to get there from your place.

Tell you want, take the Loveland pass exit, once you get over the pass, and down to Keystone ski resort take the first left into the resort, take the first left again, and go all the way down, where it T's off then take a right and go up to the town of Montezuma. From there go right through town and all the way until you reach the top of the pass (shortly after you leave town you end up on Deer Creek 4x4 trail.)

There is Saints Johns (both with the "s") which leaves out of the middle of Montezuma (on the right), Deer Creek, straight up the road, and Weber pass, on the left before deer creek, up there, all are wonderful trails, and if you are willing to take the time they all connect. Weber and Deer Creek meat up with a trip up a difficult road called radical hill, and Deer Creek and Saints Johns run along the top of the ridge line to one another. (and they are all only ten minutes from my old home...sigh...I would go up there at least once a week!)

Do you think I could do this trip with a pop up camper? Its a small popup offroad type trailer. Just worried about some of the switchbacks.

Thanks.

Mac

You could probably do all of the passes that I did with a trailer if you had to but....I personally would stay away from Mineral Creek Pass because of the roughness of the trail, slightly higher traffic then some of the other passes, and potential need to back up due to blind corners. I would also stay away from Mosquito Pass due to the sharp switchbacks and the Alpine Tunnel due to the narrowness of the road and potential need to back up. Other then that, it just depends on how much clearance the axle on your camper has.

how would you feel about taking a 08 Jeep Wrangler (non rubi) through these passes? I'm looking at doing a similar trip this summer.
