compressor box

I just glanced over the OJ compressor article (thanks, guys) and it reminded me of something I've been meaning to ask.

I've seen a couple of compressors mounted in the bottom of ammo cans. I'm planning on doing something like that, but...

Why in the bottom? Wouldn't it make sense to mount the compressor upside down on the lid?

Ammo cans have a removable lid, and if you mounted the compressor on the lid you could remove it and set it upright during use. Seems like it would get a lot better air circulation that way then if it were running in the bottom of the box. Also make connections and stuff easier.

Makes sense to me, but since no one is doing it that way, I figure I'm missing something.

Might make it a little more difficult to store hoses and stuff in the box, though.

No, seriously, that is a good idea. Mount it upside down so you remove the "can" and have the compressor exposed where you need it rather than all down in there and can't get to it.

Hope it works out for you. Sure can't figure out why it wouldn't be better that way.

BTW, Lynn is a guy's name, too...

You could always mount a little computer fan down in the box to move some air. I like the idea of having it tucked safe in an ammo can. I've seen more than one compressor hit the gound. It can break the switch off or bust the airfilter when it does. It would also prevent burns.

It would have to be a large can with dual latches, like a 25mm or 60mm. A smaller can with the hinged lid like a 50 cal can wouldn't work. You would not be able to clear the compressor when swinging open the can. Still, this is a great idea. Besides, I'm not sure a compressor would fit in a can that small...

I just fitted my compressor into a standard 50 cal ammo can last week. I've been meaning to do it for quite a while, but hadn't gotten around to it. The issue that I ran into was that the quick disconnect port stick out of the side of the compressor head, and as such, I needed to cut a hole in the side of the can to accommodate the air hose. In retrospect, I'd wonder if it would be possible to just rotate the top of the compressor head 90 degrees so that this issue could have been avoided. I wasn't going for full waterproof-ness, so that didn't bother me much, but it did feel kinda wrong to cut into a perfectly good ammo can. I can't remember what brand of compressor I have, but maybe in the morning I'll post up some pictures and find the name. It was a royal pain in the ***** to get the nuts and bolts threaded and tightened in the bottom of the can as there wasn't a whole lot of wiggle room for wrenches and fingers.

Cheers,
West
