Concept..

All right Expo..

Hear me out.

So this is a concept that I've been working on for a few days; just built a cursory prototype out of some scrap that I had laying around my shop.

Essentially, I'm tired of fiddling with ratchet straps every time I want to access my Action Packer (or similar storage container).

Envision a frame that utilizes the bed rails that come stock in a Toyota Tacoma that'll hold a 24 gallon 'Packer in the center, along with two Jerry cans on either side. All lockable, and easily removable, relocated, used as a ladder, etc.. etc..

Oh, and it'll have a mounting point for a Hi-Lift Jack, or whatever other accessory that's feasibly mountable.

Note that the version I built for myself isn't quite what I'm envisioning for others - as I already have a Jerry Can box on my bumper, and don't need another one. As far as additional features - a single Hi-Lift mount is the only one it's sporting currently. The next one I'll be fabricating will have two symmetrical bars running across the bed (vs. 1 in the picture), and baskets for Jerry Cans alongside the single Action Packer. It'll be expandable, with the option to add more baskets for other containers, etc.

Snowshoeing from 6AM until 2 PM today kind of took the wind out of my sails. Otherwise, I would've picked up the tubing to build another one.

Alas, I'll have to resort to pictures for now..

Any input, ideas, suggestions or derision is encouraged and expected (for the latter, or course).

Thanks!

Jake

I don't see the ladder part...and it looks heavy...and there is a lot of wasted space on the sides...and it would prevent you from accessing the "deeper" reaches of the bed if you had a camper shell...unless it can slide
Other than that I like the idea especially if it could slide on the integrated bed rails.

The current weight is about 10 Pounds.

Yes, there is wasted space on this design.

Hoping to have the time to fab one up according to original design w/Jerry Can holders on either side within the next few days.

Thanks for the input.

If you could make that out of aluminum I think you might have something. I know 10 pounds isn't much but some people are wusses, to the point that the best selling truck in the world for the past 16 years has this..

I see you got the tubing bender up on going? Nice!

Yup! Been fabricating quite a few misc. projects lately; the new rack I made for the Tacoma greatly decreased the "tippy" factor with the roof top tent..

Here's a rough non-dimensional sketch of what I'm envisioning. Action Packer in center, with provisions for single Jerry Cans on either side. Substitute flat bar for the round tubing (on the Jerry Can baskets).. My modelling program doesn't allow flat surfaces.

I'd love to do aluminum; not setup for it currently. Mostly, this is just an idea I've been kicking around for quite some time - just got a period to bring it to (relative) fruition..

I love it. Grab bar/Stripper Pole; complete with carpeted bed for when you collapse due to the fact that you're out of breath upon getting into the bed of your pickup..
