Are they hydraulic? If yes, then you need to immobilize them when in reverse.

On my adventure trailer I have electric brakes and use a techonsha prodigy
p3 break controler this set up works perfectly.

I was hoping not to have to change my brakes over to electric as that would mean changing the hitch / setting the handbrake / setting up the jockey wheel .
They must work in reverse , so many trailers seem to have them over there .

Hi Rockman - have you got this sorted now? It's been a while since your first post, but I've only just seen it.

The auto-reverse braking system is the standard over here in the uk and isn't without it's problems!

The two main manufacturers are Knott and Alko. I think that Conqueror use tha latter, would that be correct? If so, it may just be your brake adjustment.

I went out to sort a trailer for a chap who'd expressed exactly the same concerns as you, only to find he'd serviced the trailer himself and had re-installed his brake shoes the wrong way round! Ergo, the shoes were doing exactly as they were meant to, just in the wrong direction! Soon got him sorted out. :) However, I don't think this will be your issue.

If your running gear is Alko it should have it stamped on the dust cap. If so I'm sure I can find you a good link on how to set them up correctly. If not, I'll scan one of my service manuals for you.

Feel free to drop me a mail on my work e-mail, if you'd like too:

Rockman - there is a manual adjustment on the surge brakes under the trailer about where the front box ends. I would imagine, however, that you are not easing into reverse soft enough, thus locking up the surge.
Just my two cents.

Dendy , I am going slow as possible into reverse , being an auto .Even up the slightest incline , they are still coming on . I will look for the manual adjustment that you speak of .

Thanks for your time to help .

Ben ,
My brakes are the ALKO brakes .
I did replace the brakes shoes when we rebuilt the brakes .
My brakes work fine going forward , but they come on at the slightest incline in reverse .
Does this sound like what you are talking about ?.
Is there any way that I can , by looking , see if the brakes shoes went in wrong ?.

I don't know anything about your specific brake set up but my trailer has surge brakes on it that I used before I installed my electric brake controller.

Since the brakes were activated by pushing against the tow vehicle the only way to not have them engage when reversing was to flip a steel surge disabling lever over that stopped the surge system from working while backing up.

Does yours have a way to block the surge action manually at the hitch?

Hi Jim

I should imagine you've got either 2051 or 2361 brakes, these shoes are not handed, so you can't put them in the wrong way round - fortunately!

The easy way to tell what size your brakes are is to look at the rim of your backplate. It will have a number (like 2051 or 2361) stamped in to it. This is an explanation of the brake shoe size you have. For instance the '20' part means a 200mm drum and the '51' means a 51mm width brake shoe. The same for 2361 - 230mm drum and 61mm wide shoes.

Have a check of the size, but I'd think you probably haven't got your shoes in the wrong way round.

I've scanned a couple of colour pictures out of one of my service manuals for you. PM me with your e-mail address and I'll forward them across, so you can check what you have against the pictures.

You should always adjust your brakes on the drum, before adjusting your coupling or cables. Jack the wheels off the floor. With the handbrake 'off', adjust the brakes up on the drum, so that the wheel won't turn and then back them off until you can just hear them brushing on the drum when the wheel is turning. Apply the handbrake fully 'on and off' a couple of times and your brakes should be fine - providing there's no slack in the coupling adjustment and cables.

Ben , I have just sent my email address to you .

In the pic's of the alko system , it shows that the spring carrier is at the top of the brake system .By doing this , it means that the handbrake cable is now down the bottom of the brake system , which seems a bit odd .Is this how it should be or what ?
Also the stop ( reverse ) lug ?? is down the bottom , but on the wrong side to de-activate the brakes in reverse .
Looking at both backing plates and brakes assemblys , they are indenticle , should that be right or should they be different to suit the left / right ?>

Thanks for your help .

Hi Jim

Got your PM (and website contact form). You should have those PDFs now.

Logically (and it might be failing me slightly, as it's quarter to midnight here at the moment :)) it shouldn't make any difference if your brake cable comes in at the top, rather than the bottom, as per the Alko specs. I think you've made the correct assumption, that your axle has been assembled this way in order to keep your cables from snagging on anything.

If you'd like, I'll call my contact at Alko for you tomorrow and see what they have to say about it?

Kind regards, Ben

E-mailed you another link Jim.

Well, I've had the 'come on it's time to go to sleep' look, from the missus, so I'd better hit the hay! :) Let me know if I can help further.

All the best, Ben
