Conqueror insect screen repair

Had a minor incident involving one of the door screens on our Compact getting snagged on something while deploying the tent, resulting in a roughly 2"x3" hole in the screening.

Closest thing I can find to the screening is actually billed as knitted shade cloth:

I was able to effect a field repair with a needle and thread.

I am curious if anyone else had done any tent/screen repairs or had a source for tent canvas/screen material.

I'm thinking at this point, putting together a field repair kit might be a good idea and have started with one of these:

I like that speedy stitcher, I'm going to get one.

I haven't tried looking for the mosquito net online in the US but in South Africa that is a pretty common "ground cover category" material that you can buy by the yard(erm, meter) at any caravan shop (I mean RV/Camper store)..

For what it is worth, next time I'm going home I was going to buy a yard of the heavy duty tent canvas and mosquito net each for just this purpose. That is only May 2011 though. When the time comes I'll post a Conqueror want-list on here for all the care packages as well and just mail it back to myself with all the right import paperwork.

Good luck with the patch in the mean time.

I've torn it in a couple of places but near the edge; used some 5 minute epoxy since my sewing kit was more of a pants repair thing.

Gotta agree with an RV shop if you don't want to ghetto rig it.
My repairs always happen on day-3 of a 2-week camping trip; I always promise myself that I'll remedy the Sanford and Son repair. But I never do...

I have had a speedy stitch for years ?

being a Maui boy and working on sail boats the other thing I really like the most are sail repair kits
good needles and a leather palm are so much nicer than a speedy and the materials in a quality sail kit are strong and the thread is incredible
a good kit is about $40-$50 cheap about $15

I've used Kenyon repair tape in the past on Hiking tents. Its made for backpacking tents, however it can be used on canvas (heavy materials) if you repair the rip on both sides. It has a self adhesive on the back and holds good, but only if you get all the dust out and clean the material before applying. I learned that one the hard way. I however wouldn't use it on any high stress areas of a camper top.

Winner!

I scored some shade cloth at the local OSH that's a good match to the original screening. There weren't any real specs on the roll but from the looks of it and what I've seen so far I'm guessing that it's the 60% stuff.

A whopping $1.99/linear foot off the 6 foot wide roll.

Needless to say, I was pretty excited about this.

I do think however, that the clerk might have believed me to be some sort of wingnut... :snorkel:
