Considering Purchase of Iridium Satelitte Phone and Service

I am considering purchase of an Iridium satellite 9505a phone and service plan.

It would be great if I could get some feedback on your experience with sellers of the phone and service, as well as matters to consider.

My ship uses an Iridium setup and I have always been impressed. The calls do drop now and then, and sometimes it seems that the network is busy. There will be enough signal, but it wont allow an outgoing call. I should add that my system is far more expansive than a handheld unit. We have 4 antennas, 2 router type things that tie into the phone switch, and multiple lines. I would recommend it overall. How much does that go for anyways?

I chose SatCom Direct to be our satphone service provider at my work. We use Immarsat with the Global One Number (you can reach us anywhere in the world by dialing a "traditional" 10-digit number). I'm very happy with the service and the quality of the communications. The furthest I've used it from home so far was in Fiji and every call was crystal clear. In fact every call I've made via Immarsat has been of equal quality to a local call via landline.

I understand Iridium is equal in quality to Immarsat. I don't have any info on your handset but will be watching this thread as I contemplate buying a satphone for personal use.

We purchased our SatCom system from a well-known, high-profile individual who needed reliable 24/7 coverage literally ANYWHERE/EVERYWHERE on the planet. I saw SatCom Direct's name on some of the paperwork that came with the system. I shopped around briefly but knew if SD was good enough for the previous owner it would be fine for us. I've been using them for aprox. one year.
