Great trip report, we had planned something similar last September, but had to cancel because HWY 12 was washed out. Looks like yall had a great time!

Great trip report, I love the OBX!! (my avatar pic is from a boat on the Albemarle) My parents actually live on Roanoke Island so we manage to get out there quite a bit, though its been years since I've been up to Carova

Another trip and a few new pics

So I decided to take the same trip again, this year, for Memorial day weekend, this time bringing along some of my family.

I don't have a whole lot of new material to ad to the thread but I did snap a few noteworthy pics. Since there isn't a lot of info, on the Outer Banks, here on ExPo, I plan on adding to this thread when new materials and adventures arise.

One change for this year was our choice of vehicle: My wife's 2012 4runner Limited

It's neat how all you have to do is hit the "party mode" button and the back hatch flies open, ejecting chairs, beach blanket and girl in bikini....amazing?!

I will admit that I was a little concerned about how the 245s on 20" rims would perform in the deeper sand. That is by far the lowest profile tire that I have ever used in an off road situation. So I did a little research and found that a lot of folks were having great luck with them aired down to 20 psi.

Believe it or not...they performed flawlessly. Here are a few pics of us cruising around on some of the trails/streets/dunes, looking for the wild horses. I believe we were in the Beach Community of Carova.

I think we drove every sand road in the whole place before we finally caught a glimpse of the wild ponies. If you have never visited this part of the Outer Banks, it is definitely worth the time and the drive. There aren't many places in the east where you can drive on the beach, not to mention see wild horses. A lot of really interesting history surrounds this place.

Its getting late. I will try to post more about the trip in a day or two. Thanks for taking a look

Josh.

Thanks for the photos. I hope to make a similar trip sooner rather than later!

97tjguzzy,

The first time that I made the trip, my brother in law and I went down for Labor Day Weekend. The water is perfect in early September, so much better than in May, but I still love it. The winters here in West Virginia are wet and miserable, so by the time Memorial Day gets here, we are chomping at the bit to make some moves toward the coast

LR Max,

I think making the trip in that old truck sounds like a great adventure!
Thanks for looking,
Josh.

A few more pics

So the plan on this trip was to kind of do a condensed version of my earlier trips, so that my wife, her brother and my sister in law could really get a feel for what the OBX was all about, which meant traveling the entire length of the islands. It was a bit of a stretch on time because we were only staying three nights, because of their work constraints, but, in the end, they wouldn't have to stare at the map and wonder "what's down there?" or "what's all the way up North?", because we covered the whole length, from top to bottom.

Another visit to Jockey's Ridge

I finally got to snap a pic of the Bodie Island Light house. I've tried to visit two other times and it was closed due to Hurricane damage

And finally, the main reason that I wanted to update this thread. After two years of unsuccessful attempts at catching a glimpse of the wild horses, on the beach by the ocean, I finally got it! I have been kidding around for a while now, saying that post card photographers must have to chase the horses down by the ocean to snap a pic of them by the water. Fortunately you really don't have to do that,...and we lucked out

Well that concludes this years Memorial day trip to the OBX. Who knows, maybe Labor day? Just a friendly disclaimer, some of the pics are placed out of sequence. It would be pretty tough to hit Carova and Ocracoke in the same day, but with a little planning it can be easily done on a long weekend. Thanks again for looking.

Another point to add: Bodie Island Lighthouse is now open for climbing. It opened in April. Due to interior conditions, it had been outside viewing only but the last two years of renovation got the inside opened up. Definitely worthy of the climb!

Thanks for the intel. I didn't know you could climb any of them, except for the One on Hatteras Island

You can climb Hatteras, now Bodie Island and also Currituck way up at the north end if you're so inclined. (no pun intended). Add these to your things-to-do list.
