i dont know what exactly to do or how it happened but it seems like my crank pulley is broken. when its tightened and everything i start the car and its good for about 4 seconds and then all of the pulleys stop moving! when i tighten the crank pulley it always seems to loosen itself up really easy. i don't know if its broken or the seal or what. i need help everything is appreciated thanks!

There is a roll pin that holds the pulley to the crank. If this is missing the pulley will spin on the crank nose. A woodruff key holds the timing belt pulley to the crank nose.

With the amount of torque required to hold the pulley to the crankshaft I can't imagine it spinning freely. From my engine 6g72, 24v SOHC in the montero sport the crank pulley holds the timing gear tight against the crankshaft so if the pulley is loose, you would probably have bigger problems.

Have you checked for any seized tensioner pulleys? I'm assuming you have a mitsu engine that doesn't have a serpentine belt but uses separate belts for each of the accessories?

If your crank pulley is indeed loosening that fast there may be a problem with the threads inside the crankshaft then?

It would help if you told us what year/ model/engine size you are referring to as the design varies. That being said, sounds like your crank bolt threads or the threads in the crankshaft might be stripped. Mitsu has re-designed the crankshaft bolt for the V6 three times now, they are known to break when not torqued down correctly. To properly torque you need to use a special tool (can be home made) that has two stubs that fit into the pulley to hold it still while you apply the torque to the bolt. You can use a chain wrench for this as well but you need to be careful of damaging the rubber dampening material in the pulley if you use that tool. You need to remove the bolt and pulley and inspect and report back. Take pics. There are ways to fix this, even if you have broken the bolt. We have walked others through it on the wire.

The roll pin only makes sure the pulley is positioned correctly during assembly. It's the sandwiching pressure from the bolt torque that holds it in place and keeps it from spinning on the end of the crank sprocket. I strongly recommend anyone changing the timing belt of removing the crank bolt for any reason, replace it with updated version of the bolt and ensure to use the correct washer and also orientate the washer correctly. Its concave and needs the convex side pointed out.

okay so t was the roll pin that was broken off into the crank and now im stuck at trying to figure out how to get it out... ive tried a screw but now luck, im thinking of drilling it out but im not sure what do you guys think?

The roll pin is inserted into the crank sprocket which fits on the end of the crankshaft snout. It's not part of the crank itself. Remove the sprocket and replace. A new one will come with a pin in it. Make sure you are familiar with the timing belt procedure, because you'll have to remove it. Now is a good time to replace it. A new sprocket will have the pin already in it. Be careful when removing it from the crank if you pry too hard you can damage the oil pump. Did the bolt come out in one piece? How are the threads?

My recommendation is that you replace the sprocket, pully and Bolt with washer (updated version). Once the pulley spins like that it messes up the mating surfaces and you are asking to repeat this if re-using the old parts. Make sure you are able to torque the crank bolt correctly upon re-assembly.

Careful about drilling out that pin, don't want the hole too big otherwise you'll have slop and a new crank pulley is easily $300.

Also if you want a how-to on the timing belt replacement and water pump take a look at monterosportonline.net a member named bugzzy who is a certified and active Mitsubishi mechanic did a video on it, and he's familiar with Montero and Montero sport engines. I'm monty98 over there.
