Cummins owner needs help with 2000 taco.

I'm getting rid of my 24valve dodge and have been looking into trading for a --2000 sr5 xtra cab 3.4 L automatic tacoma --with lock in hubs 189,000 miles + 1K to boot. Pricing was hard enough on the Cummins but finding the true value of a Taco is just as hard. Kbb values the taco at 8,000$ he's priced it at 7,600 . Do these truck's really demand that kind of cash?

The Tacoma has been adequately taken care of but i'm sure the owner who is the second owner starting at 45,000miles was not a total maintenance guru ( probably used valvoline ) and didn't replace anything until had 2. Also after putting the truck on a lift showed him where all the grease zurk's he'd been missing.

I guess i'm really just wandering how tough these trucks are. 8,000 seems like a stout price for a truck with a 189,000 miles.

Many thanks for any help you guys got for me! EXPO is the best!

Seams high to me. I have owned my 2000 since new and have 295,000 on it, they will go the distance. Ensure the timing belt, water pump and thermostat have been done recently. If not I would take 800.00 off the price. It is due every 90,000 miles. I am sure the rear springs are shot unless replaced at some point in time. If your state uses road salt look hard at the aft section of the frame they rust big time.

Ask for any maintenance reciepts for your records. Hell I have a three ring binder from day one. If the truck is real clean work him on the price stating that you will need to do all the basics like fluids, plugs, filters. Using Toyota parts will cost around 300.00.

By the way if you purchase this one or any Toyota USE TOYOTA parts and fluids!!!!!!! It does make a differance.

No I dont own Toyota stock.

i owned 4 tacomas before going to the diesel world. had a built up 24 valve and then got a commonrail. just got back into a 2013 tacoma. you can build up one heck of a tacoma for what itll cost for a injection/lift pump, a 47re rebuild, and a front end rebuild! i couldve paid cash for the new tacoma for what i spent on maintanence and go fast parts. only downfall is the loss in power.

That definitely helps me keep things in perspective! The Dodge is the most expensive vehicle i've owned for sure.

Tacomas have appreciated in value. Contrary to every other vehicle out there. Some suggested it is because of the frame buy back/replacement.

I think 8000 seems a bit high for a 2000 model year with those miles. Though, for reference, my truck is worth close to 8000 and it is an 01 reg cab with just over 100XXX miles with religious upkeep. I was offered 7500 as a trade in on it recently, just cruising the toyota lot looking at Tundras.

After owning 2 powerstrokes, I could have built a awesome truck if I'd stayed Toyota and dumped the money into one of those instead. I loved the towing power and the milage un-laden but the cost of ownership is just too high, unless you are capable of doing the work yourself. I would own one if I had the time to learn and do it myself. Such is life.

If you are in one of the 20 states Toyota considers the cold-climates states, or if youre around the ocean, do a Google for Tacoma extended frame warranty....
The 2000's were the last year in the buy-back. You wanna make SURE the frame is solid. There is a ,pdf file floating around the net, that has the inspection procedure detailed and what to look for.

Other than that, they are a GREAT truck... I was heart broken to have to send my '99 to the scrapyard (under the buyback) with only 90k on it. Granted, I got $12,500 for it 8yrs after paying $14k when I bought it...Mine was only 2.7l, 5spd, 4wd Reg cab...

Tacomas do bring a premium price but they are worth it. I have been around Toyota's for years and I'm a die hard Toyota fan. I'm right down the road from you in Richmond and could come up and go for a test drive with you if you wanted. Give you my opinion on it. Send me a PM if you want.

Thanks everyone,
Im probably going to take him up on the trade. he's going to put a thousand towards my truck to cover the gap between our asking prices. I had a good friend (Mechanic) go over the truck and it seems to be in good shape. Its going to need new front struts at the least. Timing belt, water pump, thermostat and idler pulleys were said to have been changed last year with the rest of the belts. The frame checked out with his eyes.... but i am curious to what else they do to test its integrity ? The frame seemed to have been treated but only in certain places. The truck is from TX and is very rust free.

I figure with a grand to put towards any mechanical issues I should get a pretty reliable truck..... at least compared to what I got.

Thanks for the offer as well Haddix!!!! I really appreciate it big time.

When I got the letter in the mail for my 99, there was no rust anywhere on the truck and only very little surface rust on the frame. I crawled under and grabbed the passenger frame rail and could crush it with my hand. I had no idea it had rotted out like that. So it could be really obvious, you might want to take a deadblow hammer and check the frame. He may not like if you ********** it with a big 3 pound sledge but if their is significant rot, it should show up with a heavy deadblow hammer. That's my 2cents. It was pretty obviously rotted out.

Now my 01 is under the same recall but is still on it original frame and it is rusty in places but still solid. I go in yearly for the check and always hope for a new frame but so far, the stock one is solid.

Cheers,
Jorge

I've read that the warranty is good for 15 years after the vehicles initial service start date. Does that sound correct? If thats the case buying a truck under Blue book could almost be profitable if the buyback is 1.5 ? With this truck I really don't see that happening but ive been wrong before.

Buy a known rusted truck and automatically sell it to the dealer?

Actually some of the years I think are buy back and some get new frames. I think it is up to the dealer.

I'd seriously take him up on this....one walk around and crawl under from a Toyota finatic can reveal quite a bit.
