Custom Rubber Flooring

A while back I removed the stock carpet and insulation from my Disco 1. It was perpetually soaked and causing rust, etc. I also wanted to make this a more utilitarian vehicle that myself and dogs could drag mud, sand, etc. into and be easy to clean and still look good over time. Rubber flooring was a natural because I don't like Rhino liner and other like products. I also wanted to retain floor insulation to maintain or improve upon the stock levels of sound and heat resistance. I looked at the usual Dynamat, but found that it was open cell foam and therefore would hold moisture. Eventually I found a product called Luxury Liner Pro by Second Skin. This has a better than stock sound and heat barrier and best of all is closed cell, which means it is waterproof. Secondly, I didn't want to attach the flooring/insulation to the vehicle because I wanted to design the mats in such a way that I could remove all of them without removing the seats, console or other interior panels, yet still cover the whole floor area, including under the seats, as stock. To achieve this, I spent a lot of time measuring, fitting and cutting each mat to fit like the stock carpet. The mats themselves are made by first creating the top rubber coin mat layer as desired, then using this as a pattern for the insulation layer. Then I glued the two pieces together using hi-temp spray contact adhesive supplied by Second Skin. Altogether I was able to do the job with four separate mats, one for each front footwell, one for the rear footwell, and one for the load space. Interior sound and heat levels are as stock and the final product looks almost factory. I plan to bind the edges of the mats in some way as a final touch. If my interior gets water in it fording or otherwise, I can just remove the mats, hose them off, dry them and the interior and reinstall. I also don't have any electronic components on the floor at all. Feedback appreciated !

Interesting. So how much was that roughly? I've been wanting a solution to my wet carpet problems. Comes in the door seals every time.

I thought Dynamat was an ashpalt/rubber coating like normal automotive sound deadener, just sold at stereo shops at 10x the price?

Wasn't exactly cheap. Cost about 250.00 for the insulation and a 100.00 for the coin rubber flooring. Also, I should also mention that the type of coin flooring I got had a new rubber smell which lasted for a few months after the install. I think one could mitigate this by spraying the rubber down with vinegar and leaving it out in the sun for a week or so before the install.

The insulation LR used is really a sponge in disguise. I'm going to do the same with my RRC, but instead of using the rubber top surface, I'm just going to use the insulation under my factory carpets after I clean them. The RRC uses a carpet design which is already made to be removed easily, and I want to keep a more luxury feel in RR.

Sandstorm is a brand. They look extremely similar and Sandstorm is in South Africa too, I believe.

BTW, just a little advice. Try starting just one build thread instead of several mini build threads ;)

Nicer than nylon, which doesn't breath.

OK on the build thread.

Actually, I prefer the mini-build threads - it is easier to zero in on the info I need when I search for it a year or two later.

So, this is timely for us. We just finished painting the front interior of the Dormobile with Second Skin's Spectrum, and we are debating how we want to finish it off.

We are debating floormats or Herculiner, but you have presented us with another option. Thanks.

I used Second Skin products exclusively for my sound and heat insulation project in my 110. I used paint on Firewall first throughout the footwell and bulkhead, then used Luxury Liner mats in place of carpet throught the front area and seat box. I also used the Damplifier stick on mats across the bulkhead, tranny tunne, seat box and doors. Nothing made more of a difference in cutting down my TDI clatter than Luxury Liner. It all helped, but if I could only pick on, it would be LL. Great stuff, and perfect color to match the Defender medium grey interior.

Sandstorm covers are also nice by the way. That's what Roseanne has in her Toyota, which is where I found out about them, but they aren't really much of a cost savings over M&M, which are the best from what I've seen.

That was my thinking when I was debating single or multi threads. Ongoing build threads can get very long. In my experience on forums, unless you sit there for hours reading through a huge, sometimes years long build process, it's hard to sort out the information you want.

I like the functional look the flooring brings. Something about that functionality paired with the seat covers really appeals to me. I guess that makes sense that I would like it since I have LR rubber mats... but you've improved the situation by ditching the sponge backing/carpet.
This is why I like the mini-build -- one day I'll come back to this thread when I get around to replacing my carpet.
