D vs E rated tires in bigger sizes. Need reassurance

Hi all,

-

I am about to buy some 40" tires to go on truck and I've really fallen in love with the Toyo Open Country M/T's. The only problem I am having here is that they appear to have a load rating of D, with just 50 PSI. The only ones with a load rating of E are the 24R ones, and I don't want a 24 inch wheel. I plan to have about 5,000lbs on the front axle and 6,000lbs on the rear axle. I am just wondering if I will regret going with the D rated 50 PSI tires or will I be fine? Does the D vs E rules still apply to larger tires? If so, what can I expect ride-wise? Here are the specs:

-

40x15.50R20LT = D Load / 4190# max load / 50 PSI
40x15.50R22LT = D Load / 3860# max load / 50 PSI
40x15.50R24LT = E Load / 3970# max load / 65 PSI

-

Interestingly enough, the 20 inch rim has the highest load at 4190# per tire at 50 PSI.

Anyone have thoughts/advice? Thanks.

it's simply max load rating - normally, the rating comes from the number of plys and height on the sidewall. If you're doing a lot of airing down and rock crawling; I'd run away from load range D because with the weight; you'll be constantly puncturing sidewalls. OTH, I had some load range E on my H3 hummer (fully loaded at 6k); and I had a lot of trouble getting the sidewalls to flex in the snow when I was aired down.

As for tire pressures, you'll simply have to run a higher pressure to maintain proper inflation on a load range D - if you don't, you'll burn up a sidewall and have a blowout.

Still, you're at 11,000 lbs - already very close to the max load at load range E

4190 x 4=16,760. 16,760 - 11,000= 5760. You'll be fine with the 20" Ds. Especially in a Toyo MT. They are fantastic tires!

I think you will be fine with load range D also. Only trouble I see is if you plan on airing them way down.

d's

i run 37" d's (MTRK's) on my 2500, i run max pressure when im towing really heavy, but usually about 25psi on the street, all e's get you is more tread plies and a rougher ride, you dont get anymore sidewall plies with an e. my tires are rated for around 3500 @ 50psi so thats 14k for 4, my truck weighs 7k with a couple dirtbikes and camping gear in the bed so 25psi works good for that kinda load, anymore and you get alot of center wear. my next set will be d's again.
