Looks like I will be getting a Nuvi 780 for my next adventure...

Can anyone suggest a good mounting system to put it a truck?

I doubt that the window suction system would survive off road...

thanks!

You might be surprised. I don't have that particular model but my 8 oz. Tom Tom Go730 survived rock crawling and never once came off it's windshield mount. The Nuvi's only 6oz.

I do suggest wetting the suction cup before applying it to increase the suction hold.

What off-roader said...I had a 60 series atached to the windshield with a RAM mount..never budged.

x2 for Proclip. I have one in the Jetta for my Garmin and one in the Dodge as well. I just move it back and forth depending which vehicle I'm using. They don't make one for the Scrambler, but you can buy some parts from them to make a universal mount of sorts. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I will say that the ball mount on the Dodge must be slightly smaller though as the Garmin tends to droop down over time. I haven't contacted Proclip yet to see if they will replace it. I just put a small piece of electrical tape on it to increase the circumference and it has worked fine.

Both vehicles are driven in California on occasion which necessitated the dash windshield mount as opposed to the windshield mount. (against the law in CA to have anything mounted to the windshield, MN too). It is also nice to be able to put up my sun screen w/o having to take the GPS down everytime.

1st, that's no longer the case in CA. You can now have a windshield suction mount in the lower left or lower right corner of your windshield when driving on road.

[EDIT]: Just reread the above and I realize I sound like I'm lecturing. Sorry it was not my intention. Just wanted to share what I've learned about the recent (2009) changes to that law. [/edit]

When driving off road, those laws don't apply & you can use a windshield suction cup mount without any issues.

As for the proclip units, I've used a similar unit (purchased at Best Buy) for my GPS on my Audi's vents. They melted to the point they disfigured & fell off when I used the heater on a ski/boarding trip (granted I had the heater cranked for the rear passengers) so I'd verify their usability w/ your heater vents before going that route.

No offense taken... I didn't realize the law had changed... that was the case when I bought the mount... good to know though.

My mounts are mounted next to the radio in both the Jetta and the Dodge so I can't speak to the melting issue for vent mounted options. Given the thickness of the Proclip mounts, I doubt it would be an issue though.
