After a long week at work and an entire Saturday spent on the computer I needed a day of fresh air. It was to be my first day trip since moving down to Mesa, AZ over a week ago for work. No plan, no route and only my phone and the GoPro for photos. All I knew was that I was going to turn right out of the drive way. I headed down University Dr. into downtown Mesa and then Apache Junction until I hit Apache trail. It just sounded like a good name so I took the road. Turned out to be a good choice. The road slowly turned into a bunch of fun twisties and then the pavement ended. Unfortunately being a Sunday the road was very crowded.
I was feeling pretty good and this road was amazing. Those interested its RT88 (Apache Trail) and a normal car can drive it. Do not attempt in an RV though. Some of the switchbacks can be extremely tight.
Just after Roosevelt Dam, is Rt 188. I felt the need to turn right onto the road and a few miles down I saw a sign that said Cliff Dwellings. I have yet to ride past any of these and today was no different. This site was the Tonto National Monument Cliff Dwellings.
Things were going great until I left Tonto. As I rode towards Miami and Surprise, Arizona I was met with 15+ mph winds. Riding through the mountain passes was a bit of a challenge. I was soon to get a big surprise once I reached Surprise, AZ. I began poking around the run down town.
That surprise came in the form of a police suv lighting me up while I left the town. I had no clue why. Officer: "Is your bike plated?" Me: "What?" Officer: "Is your bike registered?" Me completely confused: "Um yeah, I am registered and have a plate" (thinking this officer is either blind or a complete idiot). Me: "The plate is right ther.....WTH!?!?
Yeah, somewhere along my 100 or so mile route today my plate came unbolted. Thankfully, he let me go since my registration was up to date. I now had a 50mile ride back home. Of course the streets were crawling with police and I even had to go through a check point and several road blocks.
Total cost of the little adventure, $8
