I recently purchased a new off-road trailer and with the weather turning nice decided to head to Death Valley for a few days. After reviewing trip reports here on the Portal and reading Shellye Poster's "the photographer's guide to Death Valley" I made a plan and hit the road early (real early...2 am) Friday morning. The route I took was from Phoenix (home) to Vegas, Beatty (fuel), The Racetrack (camp at Homestake), Lippencott Pass down into Saline Valley and over to the Hot Springs (camp), out Saline Valley Rd north to Big Pine (fuel), return Death Valley Rd to Eureka Sand Dunes (camp), over to Scotty's Castle, Rhyolite, Beatty (fuel), Furnace Creek (20-mule team display), Badwater and finally back to Furnace Creek to catch CA-190 down to Dante's View (camp) for a Pano of the valley at sunrise. It all worked out as planned except no vehicles w/trailers, etc allowed on the road to Dante's view. So I just continued on to Pahrump and arrived back home about when I started...2 am. It was a quick 4 day trip and I had a blast. The racetrack itself was worth the trip! I also decided to leave my D700 and tripod in the truck and play with my new Sony RX-100. It was fun shooting with a true pocket camera and as an added twist I decided to shoot only B&W.
