Well last night I hit my second deer in my jeep. My first deer I only knicked her and all it did was broke my turn signal and headlight bezel. This one is a different story though...

I had just left work at about 4:00 and was maybe a mile up the highway, on the right side is a steep bank down to the spillway of a dam with a guardrail. I had gotten up to about 60mph when out of nowhere this doe jumps over the guardrail and gave me about 10 feet of warning. I had just enough time to get my foot on the brake pedal but didn't get slowed down at all before my front drivers side corner hit her front left shoulder. She got knocked into the other lane and I came to a stop pretty quickly and went back to check the body. My first thought was "Mmm, deer tenderloin for dinner" but I was more worried about whether or not I was going to make it home, so I pulled the body off the road then went back to check the damage on the jeep. There was no smoke or steam and no fluid dripping so I figured it was fine to drive and it made it the rest of the way home. The only thing is when I turn the wheel to the right the tire rubs a little. The fender flare was still attached, I pulled it off at home to get a better look at the damage. All looks well, just cosmetic imperfects as far as I can tell. I'm going to use this as an excuse to buy a better bumper.

Well so far I'm finding that its going to cost a little less than $500 to get all new replacement parts (I'm not even going to try straightening out the fender) which includes a new electric radiator fan that hasn't worked in months, so I might as well order it now and get that fixed.

I'm debating whether or not I should try to get my insurance to pay for this? I've got liability coverage so I'm not sure what they would cover or how much they would pay out, or more importantly if my premium would go up. What do any of you think?

I think you should've aimed for a softer deer!

Glad you're okay, and that it's just bent metal and stuff.

Liability only covers others and other property in the event of an accident. It does not cover your vehicle. Insurance will probably tell you sorry.

It doesn't look to be too expensive, and we're going to do our taxes soon and getting our return, so I'll just do it myself. My wife wasn't too excited about dropping more money into the jeep, but when you figure a couple hundred bucks once or twice a year compared to a couple thousand or another monthly payment for the next several years, I'd rather fix my junk that I've already got.

I agree. I too only have liability on my Jeep. It's relatively inexpensive to fix. Even if you did have full coverage the deductible would have probably been most as much as what you're going to pay to fix it so it wouldn't be worth it anyway.

The one I hit last at 60mph did way more damage to the front. Fixed it myself for less than $800 total, not counting the paint work. Thats what gets you.

Glad you're ok...
