The answer is yes they are because that is what people are willing to pay for them to cruise around the hamptons and Nantucket.

You forgot to add...............for many many many years.

This is a handmade, almost-heirloom piece of motoring heritage, built up to a (high) standard rather than down to a price. For those that appreciate it and can afford it, and want such a thing, this is theirs.

I do some work for the Scotch whisky industry - as a 'reward' for some of the work I've done for one particular company/individual I have received several unique blends and have kept (for my 6 year old to enjoy when he is 18) a magnificent limited edition hand-blended one-off bottle, with hand-printed label with my name on it, a serial number, a hand-fabricated and bound presentation box, with a small book inside printed on hand-made paper and all of it of heirloom standard. I will not tell you what this would cost to purchase, but for those who appreciate these things it's an object worth having.

For me - it's hats off to ECR for doing such a lovely understated job and producing a fine piece of motoring craftsmanship. When you don't cut corners, you get a far more 'rounded' product. And as it will last, the descendents of the purchaser may also get to enjoy it too. How much is that worth?

Well, that is certainly one way to look at it. I am sure there are those who's perspective on a $235,000 Defender will be quite different.

In recent years the US Dollar has devalued much more than I like but I still struggle to justify any automobile valued that high. Does anyone know how many Defenders have been produced worldwide?

I feel like you could buy a NAS 110 and have ECR build it in a similar fashion for about half that.

Could be wrong but I don't think there is $300k in work there.

Why question the "value" relative to defenders of the price? Someone (or many) presumptively pay the premium.

I would imagine the high price at Copley is because it is on the lot, ready to roll. Has nothing to do with how much it cost to build. The buyer is paying for no wait time to build.

You can only polish a turd so much. FOr that kind of money you could have several Jeep Unlimited Rubicons built with nice options. Ive got love for the defender but this just looks terrible

Yeah but nobody really cares about Jeeps on Nantucket(target audience) or anywhere else, because it's still just a Jeep. People are not buying this truck because of its ability to be serviced at the local shop or because it's readily available. People want a beach runner because it's unlike anything you've seen on the road.

I am pretty firmly against super-original low mileage examples going for $200k. But when ECR puts hundreds and hundreds of hours into creating custom body and structural pieces to make a vehicle like this, it is deserving of a large amount of money.

As a closing argument, I'd like to point out that someone paid $4.3 million dollars for this photograph and you can't even drive it.

All that Gursky needs to make it worthwhile is a nice green Jeep driving along that road......oh wait....no....make it an ECR Beach Runner..... :)

Proof that the human brain can figure out how to justify anything.

Stay tuned to my website, I am soon posting a 2009 KLR650 for $79,356.00....less than 10,000 miles!!
