Defender 110 parts availability

Hello everybody,
I'll start off my saying I have a Suzuki Samurai project which I am building to set up for camping for extended periods in the bush, it's a long, long project. Recently I've found a Defender 110 for sale in my area for what seems like a fair price, the defender would be a better vehicle for what I want in almost every way, but I'm less familiar with them. The truck is a right hand drive and has the 2.5 NA diesel, how is the availability of parts for these things?

Thanks,
Chris

Start by gathering info on the 110 and then your can start sourcing vendors for the parts. Post here and we may be able to help.

What year is it for starters?

N/A 2.5 Diesel probably means it was made before 1986.

Sometimes you think you got the parts figured out by the year itself but keep in mind, the PO might have done some swapping. Think about what transmission does it have e.g. LT77, R380, transfer case, axles... Think also maintenance parts needed e.g. air filter, diesel fuel filter, glow plug, etc... Post up on the details you find.

I have a 1990 Defender 110 w/200 TDI engine (imported here). Here in the USA, I get my parts from Rovers Down South. Rovers North is starting to carry some parts but not enough. I also use a vendor from the UK (reputable on Ebay).

With the UK vendor I use, with the decline in the pounds mean more for my US Dollars. But shipping cost is breakeven (vs buying the part in the USA). My gain is the parts availability vs waiting for out-of-stock.

And check into the tools you will need for your DYI e.g. need a special size fan clutch wrench for example!

And last, check with your local indy Land Rover shop and ask if they have the knowledge/experience to diagnose or repair the particular year/vehicle you are looking to buy. You may need help with repairs beyond your capabilities. I am luckly that my local indy shop can tune a 200 TDI and also has wheel alignment specs.

Good luck with the purchase and post up pictures should you decide to move forward and buy it.

I'd wholeheartedly agree that a 110 is an ideal vehicle for just about anything overland. You might find that the diesel is noisy and slow but parts shouldn't be a problem and it's unlikely that electronics will be a problem ;)

If you do manage to get the VIN number then this site can decode it to verify you are getting what it originally came with.

Somewhere online there are a whole bunch of manuals online in PDF format but I can't find the link right now :(

Good Luck :)

Whereabouts are you Chris? I am near Toronto and know of quite a few 110's running around Ontario. As long as you are willing to wait a couple days or a week for parts, then there should be no trouble getting whatever you need.

As long as you don't mind mail order there is nothing you can't get. Also, there is a huge enthusiast network to tap for parts.

Yup, I'm in Canada too, and I'm finding everything can easily be ordered direct from the UK, and often the shipping is less than from the US. It's a bit of a change of thinking to look to the UK to get stuff, as most Canadians are so used to ordering from the US.

That 2.5NA diesel... it's slow. Like, left at the lights by school buses slow.

I'll second Trevor at Rovahfarm. He really goes out of his way to help and can get his hands on just about anything you need.

I am in Toronto as well. I had the 2.5 NA in my 110 for 3 years as a daily driver. Not fast but will go forever (at 55mph).

I get my stuff from UK, about as fast as from US but 1/2 the price.

2.5NA daily driver in Toronto? You're a brave man! :) Ever take it on the 401? That's got to be an experience. I went through there once in a 24' box truck, mid-day. That was fun but not something I want to do often.

I couldn't believe my last shipment from the UK. $75 for a medium size box, by air of course. No brokerage charge from UPS because it went air. I would've paid $75 just for the brokerage on a ground shipment from the US.

There's also Land Rover Salvage in Madoc. He could probably overnight you things if he has them in stock. But I don't know how much he stocks.

Thanks for all the replies guys but I think I'm going to stick with domestics just for simplicities sake.. and my Samurai ofcoarse.

I don't think you'll find a large domestic SUV that will do what a Land Rover can. But they do meet the requirements of many people. Just depends what you want to do.
