Those of you with dual batteries under the seat of you Defender, what Group size batteries are they? I want to make sure I don't get too big of a battery.

James,

I am planning on attending the trip to DV so will see you there. I can show you my battery set up in the 109 and also discuss my Defender 90 set up (dual yellow top Optimas)

I recommend forgoing a dual battery system in favor of one very large battery (namely the Odyssey PC2150) supplemented by a jump box.

It fits quite nicely in the 90/110 battery box.

Ah, great. I need to buy a new battery for the DV trip, so I want to choose it wisely. Mine goes under the front right seat, just like on Defenders I have seen.

Oh, nice photo. I have been wondering where I should put my jack.

I have been debating dual battery or the biggest battery I can fit.

JSQ, that Group 31 looks like the perfect size. Where did you get the battery tie downs? That's a clean looking battery box. :costumed-smiley-007

Has anyone had issues with a group 31 contacting the underside of the seat box? At this point I plan on using terminal covers and rubber on the underside of the cover. Though it is close.

Looking at a West Marine 31 in the battery tray shows I've got at most 20mm of clearance from stud to cover.

to answer the original question, with a correct dual battery tray (Gwynn lewis, etc) 2 group 34's fit in the box side to side (viewed from above, and use one reversed terminal battery ie a 34R) and have room for a solenoid and a fuse panel. a Group 31 single fits length wise and should be turned positive to the front to avoid the terminal contact issues pictured. It will fit with the normal defender angle battery tie down as well so no parts to buy. I had my D90 setup this way for years, my 110 uses a tray and 2 G34's

you can with some work and removing everything from the box, fit 2 G31's in there.. look to GMBMount.co.de for that solution but you need to remote everything in the battery box.

Or if you want to get fancy, you can rebuild the box and fit up to 4, G31s in either box or both. I have a friend with 2 G34's under the driver and 4 G31's under the passenger in a custom seat box.
