Defenders

Defenders are still expensive, although much less than in the past. But the issue is getting cloudy now that many early 80's Land Rover 110's are starting to be imported and are showing up all over. Technically these aren't "Defenders", (although they're the same trucks basically) but are usually called that for convenience (and price) sake. Many of these early 1980's trucks are in horrible condition, but if you want a very capable rig at a price usually a good bit south of $20K, then they might be worth a look. Good ones are out there. But it's a deep dark subject - the cross currents are strong, and there are sharks in the water. Be very, very careful. :REExeSwimmingHL:

The no-brainer is to get a good clean mall crawler Disco 1 - it's got a very durable drivetrain, is available for much less than any type of Defender, and is an incredible little rig when it's set up and dialed in.

Then get prepared for the Land Rover emotional rollercoaster! :smiley_drive:

As someone else said, also check out a Range Rover Classic. They win the looks department hands down over a Disco IMHO, and that's coming from an ex-Discovery 1 owner.

The stock combination of traction control and limited slip centre differential is surprisingly capable. They are comfortable and totally, timelessly classy. I'm 6'4 and don't have enough headroom in a RRC. Additionally when shopping I wanted a 5spd manual which would have meant a transmission switch in a RRC which I wasn't willing to do at the time.

In any case, be willing to wait patiently for a really good one. There are so many going for sale all over the country that there's no reason to pick up a junker when you can get a really sweet one for maybe $500 more just by being patient and looking hard. You can end up spending a lot of money on these things in maintenance so buying one that's better from the get-go will save a lot of money in the long run.
