DetoursUSAj- XJ and KJ stuff mostly...

Considering the weight savings, I may sell my bumpers to get some of these lighter weight pieces. Of course I'll have to source some stock bumpers, corners, flares and flare mounts then figure out how to make them fit again. Something to think about.:coffee:

I'm not new to the whole "build-up" thing, probably like yourself, but I'd say its likely worth it. I'm committed to keeping my mpg's up around the 20's if at all possible, and REALLY weighing the pro's and con's of changes I make. My goal is to take the xj on a sierra's trip this fall or early winter, with my dad, and I plan on getting supurb mpg's when I do! :)

I know that detours can help you source at least the front skin for like $40.00 (thats what the website says)

I also know, around here in the land of baja 1000 wannabee's, there are bumper covers galore of all types on craigslist for pennies on the dollar. There is likely the same type of source somewhere around you.

Brian

p.s. todd, thanks for the kj pics...:Wow1:VERY nice looking if you ask me.

Another reason I like that setup, too, is that no matter how minimalistic the mount is compared to other bumpers, you ARE still getting the benifit of a plate steel armored crossmember that is placed between an "ouchie" and your tender cooling system.

I like that. from the detours website (note, that the 2009 version has the tow points at about the same level as the winch plate, not down low anymore):

what I'd love to see is some footage of a backbone system being used...

Neat stuff! The price is very reasonable for the rear tire carrier. Wonder if they'd make one without the cheesy flames?

I hear the flames give you a mpg increase. might be worth it.

YES - the flames act as small venturi's, which by there very nature act to increase the airflow velocity in the bumper cavity therby producing a harmonic resonnance. The ensuing subtle vibrations combine and act as a unified vortex generator, inducing additional laminar airflow over the trailer hitch. It's like hitting the Turbo button ALL THE TIME. Wicked high speeds and substantial mpg boost, even while not moving with the engine off. Amazing really :wings:

I have a $50 gift cert from Mark at Detours for a backbone system if anybody wants to trade something cool for it. I'm open to offers. (A cool offroad/ expo ballcap, beer etc.) Maybe somebody can use it more than me. I'm not sure if it's only for the KJ or if he'll let you use it for the XJs too. It expires this fall.

later
