Dexter 3500# axle spindle nut retaining ring HELP!

I wanted to get y'all's input on my situation, I am not sure whether the gold retaining ring goes on before or after the spindle nut....I can't seem to find anything online about it and the axle didn't come with instructions and I'm used to the castle nut and cotter pin style......Help would be much appreciated!!!

From inboard to outboard it should go washer -> nut -> gold ring. It prevents the nut from loosening up and falling off.

I always mount mine in washer, gold ring and nut. Then once tight, I fold the wings of the gold ring so the nut will not losen. Just one wing folded is good and when you want want to relase, you open the wing with a flat screew driver or a chisel.
