Diesel TJ- what to do?

Unfortunately, here in the US we can't get out Wranglers with a diesel.
But I'm considering these guys for a kit to put a MB om617 in my TJ.
Any thoughts? Super reliable engine, close to the same hp/torque as the 4.0...

Well to start 1k for a adapter kit, how much for the engine? transmission? fuel running .80 cents a gallon over the price of gas, and will go back up. How much weight will the front end gain? and what will be needed to over come that.

I think it would be fine/killer in a TJ. I am planning on using the same adapter in a Toyota pickup. There will be costs associated with the conversion though. Hope it helps.

But it will be an older engine and probably will not have as much power as a inline 6 - for what it's worth.

But my 300D was very powerful. It was a little sluggish before the turbo kicked in but this can be adjusted with a timing advance and the autos in the vehicles also take away a lot of the torque at lower RPMs. I think for a light-medium duty truck like a Jeep it would be just fine.

90 hp is 100 shy from a 4.0 and still 30 shy of the 2.5. my old 2.5 TJ was a dog on the hwy with 33s and 4.88s. it was peppy after I removed the winch, bumpers, etc from it to sale it. unless the thing has torque comparable to the 4.0 I would think it would not be a wise swap.

My 300D went up the 2000-3000 ft passes @ 7000-8000 ft elevation here at 75 mph here no problem, it was also a heavy 4500lb car. It also did it smiling at 25 mpg with 340k miles :) I don't think the HP rating is that low as well, I believe it's closer to 130hp if I remember correctly. But even so, diesel & gasoline HP measurements are different. I do agree that it would be underpowered in certain vehicles and there is no debate it will be a loss of power compared to the 6 cyl. It is also a much much better candate than the 240D engine (OM616 naturally aspirated 4 cyl).

But I still think it would power a Jeep just fine. According to Luke the FJ40 (noticeably heavier) is very well powered and particularly torquey. I believe this just fine. I've also driven a 300D non-turbo converted to standard and it was like a different car.

Do it, a Diesel Tj sounds awsome... But I agree, 1K for an adapter kit sounds spendy eh.

jeep has said they are making a kit that puts the liberty diesel into a wrangler. Do a google search and you can find some info on it. It may have gotten put on hold with them bleeding money so badly lately.

Petersens 4x4 mag did a revies of a converted TJ with this kit. I really wish Jeep would pull the trigger on this, but I think with all the turmoil in teh Big 3 and with Daimler talking of off Jeep, this just got pushed into the bin or at least put on hold. To bad too, this would be a really neat kit and make for one awsome trail toy eh.

Why not swap a 3.0 CRD from a GC? I have also heard you can get these as crate motors from Mopar Performance

As far as I know, the crate 3.0CRD is vaporware, and as a few have alread said, with the current financial state, I doubt it'll ever come to fruition.
And as to the OM617, i think the numbers are closer to 125hp, 140ft/lbs if I read correctly. Rumored to be easily tunable to 180/200 with the addition of an intercooler, adjustment to IP and turning up the boost to 14psi.

Juaquin Suave- I have a '83 300D, and it cruises easily at 80 mph with the auto, and weighs upwards of 3300 lbs. With the right gearing, and a bit of tweeking, I'm thinking that this 583 lbs. engine might be a better fit for an expo Jeep than the 800lbs. of 4BT.

Still thinking... I have access to an engine for cheap, and already have the Jeep, now I just have to find an extra $1000 for the adapter:(
Maybe pull the 35" MTs in favor of some 33"s, or even 31"s...

I guess that its all a matter of personal experience & perception. I re-motored my Jeep Scrambler (Mayahaul: The Agave Burro) with a Mercedes Benz DE2.9LA OM602 that came from a Military fast attack G-wagon. The OM 617 is a dog compared to the OM602.

The things I like about the OM617 are....Mechanical pump, cast iron head, lots of them out there, & cheap to buy.

I've driven a jeep with a 4Bt in it and didn't like it. The front end felt heavy & the power band was lame.

I was just suggesting that you "looked before you leaped", that all.

Interesting project! I'm definitely gonna have to look up your build thread.
I understand the heads-up, I just wanted you to know that I do have some experience with this engine. I'm not really looking for something with more power than th I6, just something much more durable, efficient, and able to run a cleaner fuel.

I too was really disappointed when this kit suddenly died and Jeep clammed up on it. When I was cruising through jeepforum.com today looking for information on changed to 09 JK Freedom tops, I stumbled across this thread and this comment from one of the Jeep Engineering Q&A sessions they hold every so often. Thought I would pass it on for what it is worth.

There are still integration, commercial, and regulatory issues to resolve - you will hear about it as soon as there is anything to report!

We can say that it is a pleasure to drive in Moab both on and off-road at higher altitudes and even around town in Detroit near sea level.

Have we mentioned that we love diesels?
