<<Hard to find '86 trooper II diesel 4 door 4wd. Runs & drives like a top, 139k original miles.
We are the 2nd owner, I bought it from a family friend who bought it new. He kept complete
maintenance records from day one. We have clear GA title.
Only a few hundred of these were brought in over the two years they were offered, and many
of those were two door models or two wheel drive. Many more diesel pickups were imported,
so parts are not a problem.
I had planned to keep this thing indefinitely, and maybe use for a veggie project. It
would be ideal as it's low tech. I have run it on B-20 for 2-3 years now, and run some
B-100 in the summer. I've got dozens of hours tinkering with it, upgrading original trim &
accessories, etc.
But I've decided to sell, as I bought a diesel Jeep Liberty and my wife won't let the kids
drive the trooper anymore since it does not have airbags.
Truck has no rust in body and to my knowledge has never been wrecked. We did have a tree
branch fall on it which creased the hood & fender. I replaced the hood with another, but
the fender still has a crease. I have a straight fender I will include, just waiting to
paint it & replace.
Paint is still glossy. Not perfect, but pretty darn good. Hood paint not quite as glossy,
as it came from an older car. It might improve with buffing, but I had just planned to
paint when I did the fender.
5 factory alloys, shiny, but not perfect. Could probably do with stripping & clearcoat
respray, but looks good from 20'. 4 good Michelin tires, plus good spare with cover.
Four wheel drive with factory auto-locking hubs works great, 5 speed tranny & clutch
shifts smoothly.
Beige tweed interior, brown carpet. 3 original mats. I've replaced bit's of the interior
plastic which typically breaks. Perfect headliner except one small split under the
passenger visor.
I've replaced the driver & passenger seats with some from an astro van. Matches original
tweed pattern, and very comfortable with armrests. These seats are a great upgrade, much
more comfortable than the original ones.
Does not burn oil, but does have an oil leak. I have the gasket, just need to replace it.
It's an access plate on the side of the engine to the cam valley. This oil leak causes the
oil gauge to read low when warm, but engine has plenty of oil pressure & oil warning light
reads correctly.
A/C was working, but finally got low on freon last fall. I unplugged so it would not suck
air in, and plan to have it leak checked/recharged in the next few weeks. Compressor is
not frozen.
Glow plug system working correctly, instant starts in warmer weather (1st compression
stroke), and normal starts in cold. Does take a few seconds to settle down. I replaced 2
of the glow plugs in 2008. Block heater works great, fires 1st compression stroke even in
15 degree weather when plugged in overnight.
Service records show rebuilt/replaced alternator, clutch, shocks, water pump. All fluids
(tranny, transfer case, axles, etc) changed periodically. Brakes stop fast & true. Fresh
battery. If it needed it, this car got it.
I changed timing belt, Timing crank pulley, and valve push rods when I got it (132k?).
Pully had loosened/wobbled, and caused 2 bent valve pushrods. Replaced all push rods with
new, no valve/piston damage. Replaced Fan belts at the same time. Flushed & changed tranny
oil. Front brake pads replaced at 136k.
Turbo works per boost measurement, but wastegate may need some tweaking as you mainly feel
the boost at 2300 rpm or better.
No radiator leaks, overflow bottle intact & functional.
Some wiring harness repairs around the battery connection. Head, tail, & brake lights all
work, as do the dash lights. Cig lighter works, as do wipers, fan, etc. Interior light
works, but will occasionally stick on if in door mode, which may be a door switch.
Radio has been replaced with a Sony CD with Bluetooth, but I have the factory radio.
Replaced front speakers, but used factory grills so still looks original.
Have replacement front seatbelts to install as the inertia reel is a bit slow on retract.
Also turn signal assembly, current one does not cancel reliably. (Works, just does not
always auto-cancel)
Will include original factory service manual with diesel supplement as well for the right
deal. (Unobtanium!)
This is a nice driver. I routinely drive this truck on 200-300 mile trips, and it's my
normal "go to town" car when I don't want to drive my Cummins Ram. I smile every time I
crank it and hear it fire on the first compression stroke!
Pretty much anything this
car has needed I've taken care of as it occurred.
Price is $3250 with pickup in Atlanta.
Not to be a pain, but to avoid wasting our collective time: I've turned down $2500 cash
offers already, so please no lowball offers. I've been very specific on condition detail-
what's good & what needs work, so I'm pretty firm on price. Diesel troopers are very hard
to obtain in any condition, and I've not ever seen a 4 door 4wd in this type of condition.
If you are looking for pieces parts, this is not the one. I'll keep it before I part it
out. If you are looking for a nice driving 4 door diesel trooper with complete service
history, it maybe for you. email or ring as needed with any questions!
