DIR Drawer Idea

Hey guys,

I've been hiding in the corner just crawling through the forums for a while but only recently started posting on here!

I've been really inspired by the DIY rear drawers not just for the JKUs but also all the other 'vehicles' and I've been stealing ideas here and there for my own DIY drawer!

Snapshot_009.jpg

Snapshot_010.jpg

The design features a drawer specifically for the stove with a partition where I plan to keep all the cooking utensils. The drawer above the stove is H110mm x W320mm x D700mm. The main container box that holds all the drawers is H300mm x W750mm x D750mm just to get an idea for the size of the entire setup. The stove that was measured out is a Wild Country double burner. The white boxes sticking up in the images are lids for the drawers that double as tables for putting things down on.

I'll be building it this weekend, only parts that will not allow it to be completed is the heavy duty drawer slides which I've ordered, 700mm with a 100kg load rating.

The box is designed to be bolted down with 4 turnbuckles that attach to the JKU's stock tie down points. I was trying to be as un-intrusive with drilling holes into the vehicle as I can which in this instance has been avoided. I'm hoping this will be sufficient to hold the box down. If the turnbuckles are not sufficient I'll look at steel brackets and longer metric bolts to replace the tie down point bolts.

Eventually I also plan to add a slider 60lt ARB fridge on top. I also plan to add to the original boxes through hinge attachments that'll fit around the shape of the JKU's boot to make it flat for laying cargo on top. The hinges will allow for small items to be stored and secured away whilst also maintaining a top flat surface for cargo storage.

Would love some feed back on this before I start building it this weekend!

Regards,

Gouldie.

Been a while since I last posted on here as I've been away. Finally got a chance to make a start on the drawer system. Smashed out all the cutting in a couple of hours. Now I've just got to put it all together. Will post more updates soon!

Hi Gouldie, your build looks great from the concept sketches. I'm also looking forward to checking out your build progression.

Does the whole unit slide out and then over? Is that your sketches in the first post? I'm having trouble connecting the dots in how that sketch comes to be what you have prototyped.

I came across this recently and it got me to think about possibilities for my set up (no trailer though). You probably spent a lot of time planning yours out so I thought I'd share a different approach. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21uSZTaEK1E

Hey Wildo,

I've had to make some changes since the concept. I've decided to have one single large draw for the bottom drawer as it makes better use of available space. The initial design saw drawers that were too small as a lot of it was wasted on fitting the heavy duty slides which are around 40mm thick. I've attached photos of the progress so far.

The bottom drawer is planned with a lid and separators. The lid will double as a work bench/table and will be in parts so if the stove is being used for instance the other parts of the lid are still usable as a table.

Got to say I'm learning lots regarding working with wood. Cost I'm trying to keep costs to a minimal but it slowly is creeping up. If some one was to ask if they should build or buy one here's my suggestion.

If you can't find a pre built box that suits you then I would build one specifically to your needs otherwise I would highly recommend buying one straight off the shelf.

Maybe in other parts of the world the cost of materials is relatively low but I've found here in Australia the cost of materials can still be relatively high not to mention the numerous tools required for wood working and shaping plus all the extras.

After hours of labour of love, I can say she's nearly done! Its actually turned out a lot better than what I'd expected. For a while when it was all in pieces I wasn't too happy with the product but as it falls together I'm finding it's looking mint!

And of course my little helper slacking off in the corner.

Awesome work! Looks like it will be a very convenient setup for the long-haul.

I think you are overworking the help...

Sgregg it's called a "Lumik". It was a cheap 40lt I found on ebay for $440 AUD. I'll be sticking up a review of the fridge after I get back from my 2 week trip on the Canning Stock Route where I'm sure the fridge will be tested thoroughly and we'll see if she breaks or not!

And now it's just the finishing touches. Just in time for leaving on Monday on the Canning Stock Route!

The missus said she'd throw on the finishing touches tomorrow and make it all look nice. (Laminate on the bench top, paint exteriors and drawers etc.)

I'll post more updates then and I'll post updates from the field once she's set up.

Sounds like a good shakedown trip! Enjoy and great job on the build!

Box has been performing great however some improvements I plan to make when I get back.

- Improve the mounting of the box to the vehicle. Adjusting the box and adding support so that it lays flat on the car as it's currently angled hence making shelves harder to open.

- Making the top shelf out of 16 mm plywood rather than 12 mm and it's not strong enough to support the weight of the fridge and water.

- Possibly a rebuild of the base of the box out of square steel tubing. Could reduce weight of the box and will definitely improve the strength and rigidity.

- Make the two upper cupboards drawers as everything has to be pulled out to get to stuff at the back. Will have to work on a way of retaining the spices rack as those have been awesome!
